He's giving the engine to his mechanic and the truck will be scrapped. I guess the water was pretty dang nasty and he has no interest in rewiring it and dealing with it. Last I heard he was at a Holiday Inn up in VA. Seems to be ok otherwise... If we can do anything for him I'll pass it on to the lists. john On Sun, 4 Sep 2005, Tom Moulder wrote: > -->Whenever anyone needs help, wants to buy something, or has something to sell > -->- please, please, please tell us where you are and, if pertinent, the specs > -->of your vehicle or the thing you want to buy or sell - it will save wasting > -->time with a message like this. You may remember that he beat me to putting a Mercedes Diesel into a Jeep. :) and now... his Mercedes Diesel MJ was submerged above the windshield... :( He had contacted me thinking I was further along than I was... in turn he blew past me with the idea and made it a reality... He will do it again, this time I'm sure it'll be better! :) Steering and oil sumps seem to be the critical design issue... If you recall I had acquired two XJs this spring and a couple of Mercedes... Rather than part them out I rebuilt the '79 300SD and sold the '83 300D with the bad engine to someone who was going to have the engine fixed... that and the '86 XJ (cherokee chief) was too nice to dismantle... and also 2 inches too short in the engine bay for the engines... the '92 xj would have been a good choice for either engine, but I thought I'd be able to get it running... anyway... Steven beat me to it... And I've sold the '86 XJ to my son who is coming home on leave to retrieve it later this year. The '92 xj needs an engine and selling it as is or will rebuild the engine over the winter... OR... if I find a good OM617 and get my carport rebuilt I may attempt to do the same thing that Steven has done... I have a beautiful '92 sport with a bad engine... tempting... very tempting... ;) The technical issues that Steven encountered with putting the 3.0L Diesel into the MJ/XJ were primarily related to the way the oil pan sits on the 3.0L. It's forward... right in the way of the axle and steering. Steven and friends engineered a different steering setup. He had some pictures up on a website... I never got around to building a page on my server, Steven, if you still have those pictures and want to do a write up I'll put it on wagoneers.com. In converstations with him about the conversion we're looking for rear sump setups for the Mercedes OM617. I think some of the folks on the DieselBenz list mentioned a possible source... The way I was going to work the problem is 4" of lift. :) Anyway, Steven and and his wife are up in the northeast on a short term contract... thankfully I'm certain he'll be fine and will be praying that they prevail against the insurance company and it's "water exclusion" clause... Interesting how there's all these little clauses for things that happen that insurance companies avoid payment on... like when a contractor plugged up that drain and destroyed my carport... my only option was legal action against the contractor... of course the legal costs cost more than the carport... So, in other words, remember Steven and others like him in your prayers as they deal with rebuilding, recovery and a restart. Pray that the insurance claims and recovery go smoothly and they are able to start over without suffering financial lost. Pray for strength to endure the process... Pray that what is left of his house and belongings are safe until the waters recede and they can get to them. Pray for peace to deal with the loss of any friends that weren't able to make it out. Surely this has hit close to home for Steven and his family... Many of us live in dangerous areas... I live amongst volcanoes and fault lines. Our infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest is fragile at best. We would be cut off worse than those on the gulf coast. You can count the number of ways out of this area on one hand... seriously... It's not a matter of if, but of when... yet, like those in New Orleans, this is where we're staying... unlike those in New Orleans, unless it's a volcano we really don't have any warning if we have a major earthquake... How do you prepare??? Look how long it is taking to get help to those down there... john here's part of our chat: - -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: Merce-Jeep no more... Date: Sun, 4 Sep 2005 19:20:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Steven To: john Eh, insured... well... Seems the insurance on the home had what is called a "water exclusion". However, once the city/county comes in and condemns the house, and orders it's destruction, I'm sure lawyers will become involved. We had hurricane-specific homeowners, and somehow they weasled in "water-exclusion". Gotta love that. The Wrangler had full coverage. The MJ only had liability/uninsured. It will, however, be covered to some extent by homeowners, assuming the 'water-exlusion' doesn't kill the whole works. It seems that even though we were within a stone's-throw from a major drainage canal, we were not within a 'flood-zone', which is necessary to acquire flood insurance. Reguardless, the mj will be kept, and the motor and tranny will be salvaged, most likely to go into one of the many boats we have awaiting a diesel repower. The truck it'self, is pretty much just a body parts donor now. Luckily, rust shouldn't be an issue, but rest assured that the sewage smell will NEVER leave the cab. (they're heading up to the northeast for a short term contract) And when you have no home, no belonging, and no vehicle, a job with room and board and transportation is a god-send, reguardless where it is in the world! - -Steven - --- john wrote: > > was all this insured? > On Sat, 3 Sep 2005, Steven wrote: > > >-->hey john, > >-->checking my email from the lobby of a holiday > inn somewhere in VA, lol. > >--> > >-->The mj was completely submerged, above the > windshield. > >--> water will be sitting on top of whatever piston > was > >-->on intake stroke, for sure, and having been > submerged > >-->for over eight hours, there will surely be water > in > >-->the crank case.
