Let's see, temperature extremes, if I recall correctly, are from at least -30 to about 95... that's 125 degrees, right? (farenheit, it's less if you use celcius. ;) (did I spell that right???) here our coldest cold snap, which last maybe 36 hrs, is about 15 or 20 degrees... if the temperature gets over 90 people start dying... typically a hot, hot (dry) summer day might hit 85. So that's a normal swing of about 60 degrees... and I use synthetics... ;) (rofl...) john On Tue, 18 Oct 2005, Jim Hoffman wrote: >-->I have used Shell Rotella. I have a habit of being long winded which may or may not coincide with my being an engineer. I have posted in the past but in general, I tend to "lurk" because: 1. full time job 2. Army Reserves (company commander) 3. "Honey Do" list :-) ********** Background ********** I have a '73 J4600, 360 engine, TH400 trans, Quadra Trac full time transfer case, Dana 44 front axle, Dana 60-2 semi floater rear. Partially due to problem of getting 12" x 2" drum brake components, I have been working on changing the front axle Dana 44 closed knuckle over to a more modern open knuckle. To achieve this, I worked with a "local guy" to get a replacement axle ('78 Blazer Santa Fee). He provided the axle and moved my 4.10 gears to the "new" axle and installed new seals and bearings. He also provided Bronco parts (knuckles out) so that I could keep the 5 on 5-1/2 lug pattern (and now disk brakes). ********** Issue ********** After finally replacing ball joints and u-joints and putting everything together, I noticed that things were a little loose. (I highly recommend an inexpensive press for these older parts ($120 or so from Harbor Freight). Especially considering the number of hours I spent using a vise, pullers (of different types) and a torch.) After pulling the cover off of the differential I found out that the spline between the two axles was different. It looks like: 1. 35 Spline (1.5 in) '73 Jeep J4600 2. 30 Spline (1.3 in) '78 Blazer I am guessing at the spline count as my eyes keep going buggy counting them. ********** Question ********** What would anyone suggest I do now? Can I buy and change the side gears that interact with the axle shaft? Should I just look into buying custom shafts? Thanks in advance, Jamie Phillips '73 J4600 Buffalo Grove (Chicago Suburb), IL ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Oct 2005 19:34:38 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: Front Dana 44 Question why didn't you look for a '74 -79 J10/20 front axle? Should fit nice behind my '83 J10 stepside. :) Also, someone mentioned that there might be a Mercedes Diesel with a manual trans available in the area soon... if it's a 4 banger, which I think it will be, then I could adapt it to this CJ2 and have a nice little Diesel powered CJ2. The CJ2 has a 2.0L Pinto 4 cyl with the stock manual trans now... In other news... progress is actually being made on SuperDawg! The cab insides were bedlined as was the bed... I start my 10 mile commute in 1 week and 2 days... dream job on the dreamliner, mixed emotions, love my current job and will miss the folks there, but the new job is even better... :) The euro lights on the 91 300d are working fine... nothing has melted, caught on fire or fried anything... yet. ;) still need to adjust the fog lights... Tough decisions... will I be able to keep my 300d, j10 AND a cj2 as well... stay tuned to this station... the wheels of saga keep turning... ;) So the plan is for my son to drive this up to Seattle: http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/marks-48/ALL.html then drive this back: http://wagoneers.com/fotos/johns-cars/JimmyDiesel/ john current fleet: 91 300d, 99 wj, 83 gmc, 75 j10 trailer (off site: 83 j10, 67 j100) est.
