I just learned that only in Canada do they still use Onion Mercaptan oils. In the US they use mostly Butyl ones (that explains why the exhaust smells different here than in Canada. LPG up there smells like fresh bread after being burned through an engine) I wonder how this butyl poison they are using down here is affecting the environment? (LPG is the only fuel allowed for use indoors. Back when it was certified, they used the onion version of the oil. The current stuff may not be a non-health risk like the onion stuff) I still have my LPG data books around here someplace (from Canada) that identified the onion oil as the usage for smell up there. (I saw the book just before I moved and saw that posted on a website recently too. Probably http://propaneguy.com ) Quote from the link: Yes. A chemical agent is added to make LPG "smell". This smell is due to primarily because of a chemical called" Ethyl Mercaptan" . http://yedda.com/questions/smell_cooking_gas_8629742071315/ More on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanethiol http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/r?dbs+hsdb:-at-term+-at-na+Ethanethiol http://www.factmonster.com/ce6/sci/A0832739.html onion oil? well, that explains a few things... always wondered why I had an allergic reaction to propane, now I know... dang. they give it some fancy name for what the smell is... of course Jim could be all wet, but nonetheless if I get a good whiff of propane I have a bad reaction... :( still use it for cutting metal, cooking steak and burning out wasps, heating metal, etc... just the raw propane smell gets me... the other thing I don't like about propane is it's got less energy than gas so you lose power and economy... and the tanks and refueling are somewhat inconvenient. john _________________________________________________________________ Get a preview of Live Earth, the hottest event this summer - only on MSN http://liveearth.msn.com?source=msntaglineliveearthhm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2007 10:49:26 -0700 (PDT) From: john <john-at-wagoneers.com> Subject: RE: fsj: onion oil??? really? yes, but does mercaptan have any onion or garlic extract in it?
