Story about why I was changing some exhaust manifold gaskets,, to try to find a leak.. I chaNGE THE gaskets install the manifold but then forgot about the stupid flapper thingy,, i cant lower my pass side exhaust more then 1 inch or 1 1/2,, so while taking off the manifold again the whole manifold cracks in half. That is something i have never seen before... how in the heck does that happen? lol.. Anyway stock exhaust manifold would me conceeding defeat,, shorty headers are an upgrade(upgrade to what?).. however i still think that heater or engine will have to move... i see two 3/8 sbolts inside under dash.. however i cant get anything on them. which figures because those have to be it plus the two outside.. this thing is a nightmare when you dont have right tools...my next thing which will have to wait till i return from deployment will be dropping the gas tank changing sending unit or possibley just sock(anyone have a part number for replacement sock?) then i will think about new springs and tires and ujoints and glovebox lock(anyone have a spare glovebox button?) I had the entire exhaust system replaced, though, so I could get bigger pipes. The headers I got (Edelbrock) end in a Y with a 2.5" outlet, then it goes up to 3" and is 3" stainless all the way back (including muffler and high-flow cat). Stainless is definitely the way to go -- still no rust, and that was over 5 years ago, maybe closer to 10. But what I _can_ tell you is that headers tend to result in loose bolts which make your exhaust tick louder and louder, and/or you blow the header gaskets and get that tick... I was having to have the gaskets replaced and/or bolts tightened at least every six months, maybe more often. The solution was to get the copper gaskets. Something like $35 for the pair, but worth every penny. Haven't had a single problem since installing them, and that, too, was probably 5 years ago or more. I have no idea if the transplant will work as expected, but then I have a lot of issues to deal with such as sagging headliner, worn door panels, etc. I'm not fond of the climate control or seats in my 300D, but the fact it always goes and gets great mileage makes it nice... but still the plan is one vehicle... if not the '91 Grand Wagoneer with a 6.2L Diesel, then maybe a late model XJ... http://wagoneers.com/tmp/sj-xj.html I think I'm realizing that getting a Diesel or great mileage may not be what I'm really after... I want one vehicle that I like to drive... I've had 24 SJs, and 12 XJs... Lots to like about a Full Size Jeep, lots to dislike... my only beef with the '91 300d is that the climate control is fussy and my wife doesn't like the seats... and of course it's not a Jeep. :) It can't tow, it doesn't go well in snow, it's low so I can't see over traffic... but otherwise it's a great car... I have found several XJs I'm thinking of looking at... we'll see... I did get some homework done... really...
