As for the people, it depends on which one you meet in the streets.... be on the wrong part of town w the wrong clothing or wrong xxxx put your word or choice... your are hosed... Even in the french country, you have quarrels from a village to another w devastating results.... a bit like big cities districts.... or Kosovo, Kenya, Iraq..... shoot and don't ask questions. About 5 years ago... i met some people in a remote sierra trail head.... "Oh, you are french...." this was the nadir of US-french relations because of the middle east.... I guess it can be summed up in this... the french are worse than americans when it comes to things like language... someone traveling in the states from a foreign country will be helped, most of the time, if not all of the time... in france, they don't willingly speak english or german... my experiences are from the '70's and early '80s... not sure about now. most unfriendly people...
