I had cork before.... Cork is mounted dry... don't tighten too much and the oil will make the gasket seal.... this is the theory. RTV is no no...... John said silicone..... any product in mind... the one i use around the bathtub (just kidding) Went shopping today..... 2 new headlight bezel and dashboard lenses (only took 2 left one for the next jeep owner) amazing.... almost clean 75 wagoneer, that has been sitting.... the blinker lenses were so clear, that i forgot to take them... but a lot of humidity damage: the screws around the cluster instrument were corroded... but the ball bearing of the ashtray were pristine. Had a quadrajet w the infamous prestolite. I have a number of things that I want to do and improve, but there is no reason why this Jeep wouldn't drive across the country tomorrow... I would even consider delivering it if all travel costs are covered... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://wagoneers.com john's 6.2L GW: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Omega/ SAVE FUEL use AMSOIL Synthetics: http://wagoneers.com/AMSOIL - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- # ________________________________________________________________________ # 1a. I'm not 100% sold on the 6.5 because of the economy though... may go with a Mercedes Diesel... this rig will primarily be an around town driver... I'll see what comes along... the 6.5L TD has a lot of nice features and lots of power... it may win... the Mercedes engines might be ok... I've kind of given up on the idea of building one vehicle that will do it all well. The Grand Wagoneer turned out quite nice in town, but doesn't have quite the feel that the WJ or the Blazer has on the freeway, and at 24 mpg it's more economical than they are... But in town the GW and the Blazer are pretty close... The GW feels great around town and in parking lots... really like it... but the goal is to get down to two vehicles, which the Blazer and the Benz handles. My wife has made a few comments about how nice the Blazer is, thankfully... it helps my indecision. :) no nibbles on the Grand Cherokee yet... guess I'll need to lower the price a bit more... Omega is pretty much ready to leave, all I need to do is put the stock driver's seat back in and finish loading the spare parts. :) The project turned out quite well... better than most expected... finding the '94 Blazer was an unexpected change to my plans... my wife had admitted she would have taken the Grand Wagoneer to South Dakota once I put those WJ leather seats in it. It was almost the ultimate... but five minutes in the Blazer with its factory features and vibration free quiet won us over... If I were to change the mounts in Omega I believe I could get the vibrations way down... but I still wouldn't have those little factory extras that come with the Blazer... like that nice tailgate and a few other niceties... sure, it's a Chevy... but I can live with that. :) Those 6.5L TD Blazers are more scare than a Grand Wagoneer... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://wagoneers.com john's 6.2L GW: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Omega/ SAVE FUEL use AMSOIL Synthetics: http://wagoneers.com/AMSOIL - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 06:36:27 -0700 From: "Tesar Landon" Subject: RE: fsj: RUBBER OR CORK TRANSMISSION GASKET I have used a punch to 'flare ?' the bolt holes down (from the top of the flange of the pan) then more clamping force is spread across the flange area when tightening, so no need to overtighten.
