I shipped an xfr case and a variety of stuff on a pallet to CO from WA and it wasn't too bad... ...finding WT chero axles could be challenging... I have a set of J10 axles, but don't really want to cut/weld... the Wagoneer axles would work if I could find a set with low enough gears... problem is around '80 Jeep went to 2.72 gears in most of the wags... my '83 j10 has 3.31's, my '80 j10 has 3.54s... my '75 J10 had 4.10s, have the rear axle in my '83 J10 now, but like an idiot gave away the front axle, couldn't use it anyway, not with an NP xfr case... so I need to regear the 3.31 to 4.10 or use the axles from my '80 j10.. 3.54s aren't too bad... unless you've got a 3.3L Nissan Diesel that's used to 4.88s. ;) the Model 20 used in the SJs are one piece axles, never had trouble with them. D44s showed up on a number of GWs, my '91 had a pair. My '80 J10 has a M20 in the rear. The Quadratrac that had offset axles were the BW 1339s, the NP219 used from '80 to '82 had centered diffs. Trying to decide what I'm going to do with my fleet... I think I may spare the '80 J10 from becoming a parts rig... not sure what to do with the '86 CJ-10A at this point... it's a lot of fun but not completely practical... my wife, family and friends keep pointing out how nice my '94 blazer with the 6.5L Turbo Diesel is... but it's big and boring and NOT a Jeep. ;) I guess I'll take the bed off and see if the ballast was removed and see how it does without the weight... I'm also looking at an '80 300GD(again)... only problem is it's a 4speed manual, non-turbo... but it'll be faster than the CJ-10A and seats 5. Not sure if I can fit a 55 gal drum of WVO in the back though. :) It's a 2 door hardtop with one large door in the back... pretty nice... looked at it a year ago and the guy just got a 4 dr 300GD... I miss my '83 J10 stepside, it's been dismantled since 2001... missing it's engine... hoping to bring it home in a couple of weeks from a shop 105 miles from here... might use the Nissan 3.3L Diesel in it... and then the 4.2/t18 from the '80 J10 into the '86 cj-10a (one of the stock configs)... but that's two engine swaps... no, three, then I'm still missing an engine for the '80 J10. A Cummins 4BT in the '83 J10 Stepside would be cool... if I had a couple of grand I didn't know what I was doing with... ;) The 3.3L Nissan non-turbo just doesn't have a lot of enthusiasm to it... nice solid reliable engine, but if I have two full barrels of WVO in the back this thing will need to be towed over some of the hills... :) We're in the middle of a cold snap, not sure how much playing around in my shop I'll be doing... temp is down in the 20's... only lasts for a week or so... then we'll be back into rain and 40s. The '80 300GD stands a little better chance of motivating with a load, and I could always swap out the 3.0L/4 speed for a turbo version with an AT, or maybe a 5 speed... it's as practical as the blazer, smaller, more economical but lacks a lot of the creature comforts like a/c, power windows, etc. So many options, so many swaps, so little time, so little money... ;) john -o|||||o- 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) 4.7L V8/45RFE/NV247 1994 Chevrolet Blazer (K1500) 6.5L Turbo Diesel/AT - for sale 1991 Mercedes 300D (124) 2.5L Turbo Diesel/AT (Shadowfax) 1986 CJ-10A 3.3L Diesel/AT 1983 Jeep J10 Stepside (SJ) 4.2(missing)/T-5/NP208 (Superdawg) 1980 Jeep J10 Shortbox (SJ) 4.2/T-18/NP208 - for sale 1975 Jeep J10 long bed (SJ) hydraulic dump trailer - for sale 1967 Jeep J100 (SJ)Panel 232/T-85/D20 - for sale -o|||||o- http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Mon, 15 Dec 2008, Jesse wrote: # Hey guys... I believe this is my first post... so, thanks for the forum! I have not found my CJ10... yet! # # The reason you find the spring pads closer on the panel wagon, is it was built on the Wagoneer chassis. The J truck's frames go wider behind the transmission crossmember and, of course their axles are 6" wider than the Narrow track vehicles. # # HOWEVER! if you want the width of a J10 but the spring pad location of Wagoneer, you can use the WT Cherokee rear axle. Since these are built on the Wagoneer frame and not the pickup frame, they have the best of both worlds. # # Wide (rear) Axle, Narrow Spring pads. # # The Chero WT used a rear D44 from 74-81 (gets a little foggy in 80-81 as some used AMC20) but note that the automatic with quadra trac 4WD have an offset to the psngr side. The manual trans were centered. # # After 80-81 (some mixing in that year only) the WT Chero came with an AMC 20 rear. All were centered. # # These are actually a good rearend as they do not have the pressed on flange found on smaller vehicles, but have solid axles from the factory. If you're going to get crazy on the rocks or go bigger than 35's, you should weld the tubes, do a light truss; you should do just fine. I would think with the low speed torque of these Nissan 6's, the AMC20 from a WT Chero would do very well. They are also lighter weight than the Ford 8.8, 9" or D44, if that's a concern. # Feel free to e me here or at j2sax-at-yahoo.com. I live near Springfield, MO and actually have a set of the Chero WT axles with AMC 20 rear, if anyone's looking for a set. # Have a great Christmas Season ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2008 23:32:48 -0500 From: "Neal Hoover" Subject: Re: fsj: door glass interesting, and thanks for the thoughts, Michel! (and yup, all my sheet metal has fresh paint, so no door swaps) i bought new window slides from BJs a while back... before the project got put on hiatus for a while. sounds like my '76 is right in the middle of the glass change years. i guess right now it doesn't matter what i currently have... i just need to get the right thickness glass to fit the new sliders that i have??? i have a few set of hardware for teh vent windows. some of them have the hole in the glass, others don't. any suggestions there? As for the vent windows.... the hinged on the slanted part changed.... and the older style has a hole in the glass. The easiest is to swap a whole door, which is what i did, but in your case, if I remember the truck has been newly repainted so it does not work. I have the old style glass somewhere.... My '88 had the stock 2.72s, and I switched to 3.54s a few years ago, but those turned out to be higher than I want. (They'd be really nice if I had an overdrive. And I already have the 31" tires, for an overall ratio of 3.25.) So I want to go up to 3.23 gears. (Or, since those seem to be less common, 3.31 as a backup option.) I'd just live with it, especially short-term, as I have for the last few years; but recently, it clunks when I put it in 4wd, and then when I shift between drive/neutral/reverse while in 4wd. So I'll obviously get it checked to see if it's something else, but the front differentials have made a humming noise when engaged ever since we swapped them, and the shop supposedly checked all the joints just a couple months ago. So unless it's the transfer case, which I doubt, it's probably the differentials. So if I have to replace it anyway, I might as well change them both at the same time for the new gear ratio. Oh, and the shop wants $2100 for both differentials, parts and labor. But they said labor is "only" $800 -- so that's $650 per differential. Most places online seem to have them for under $300 each. But I was wondering if anybody knew of a place with particularly good prices, or a good reputation or something. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If it's really a supercomputer, how come the bullets don't bounce off when I shoot it? -- The Covert Comic - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #3223 **************************
