A: I gave my assistant manager a ride to and from work today (Her VW Scirocco doesn't like snowplowing!) from Magnolia (she lives on the far side of the base beside Discovery Park) and I had very little trouble except when I got to the spot near the crest of the hill. The car in front of me started spinning out of control and headed back down the hill backwards. I cut across someone's lawn to get out of his way and watched as the silver Gwagen went down the hill out of control and nearly flipped onto it's side. (the things I see when I don't have my camera!) I made sure the owner was okay and spun my way loose from the tall snow and around the corner where Isabelle was hiking up to meet me (she didn't think I could make it that far). Took her home to her doorstep tonight and smushed the snow enough with a power slide as I left so that she can get her car out tomorrow. Sure beats using a snow shovel! I've had several people look underneath my Spirit just to ensure it's not a 4x4 Eagle in disguise! LOL! (maybe next year) Could've used a little more ground clearance. From: john Subject: fsj: Re: [db] at last, the Jeep prevails... You know I've been thinking about that... was wondering if the Rover, which was built on the Jeep Wagoneer design would do better than some of the newer Jeeps. I'd love to test out a Gelandewagen, Rover, Grand Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer and a few others just to see for myself... I wonder if the luxury asian import 4x4 wagons have anything going for them too. I watch the blazers, suburans, expeditions and explorers slip and slide a bit but make it... don't see a lot of the GLs or Rovers... If you're in the area give me a jingle, would love to see how well the Rover does... I'll consider anything with a Diesel... or that's a Jeep. ;) john _________________________________________________________________ Life on your PC is safer, easier, and more enjoyable with Windows Vista.. http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/127032870/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Dec 2008 00:08:31 -0800 From: Jim Blair Subject: RE: fsj: my driveway ate a truck... I'm going to have my '83 J10 longbox for sale once the snow recedes enough that I can get to my cabin again. It has 3.31 gears (was originally a 5 speed truck) I kept the 4.2L (which runs pretty good, but leaks oil because they used the wrong gasket with the replacement aluminum valve cover). I swapped in an AW4 and buttoned it up to the NP208J (with a 1" spacer ring from http://partsmike.com) All it's been waiting for to get running is a custom trans crossbar (and me to have time to work on it. I did 9 weeks straight open to close without even a day off and that left me too tired to work on it this year, along with the super high gas price) From: Dan Black Subject: fsj: D44 gears Anybody know a good place to get new differentials? My '88 had the stock 2.72s, and I switched to 3.54s a few years ago, but those turned out to be higher than I want. (They'd be really nice if I had an overdrive. And I already have the 31" tires, for an overall ratio of 3.25.) So I want to go up to 3.23 gears. (Or, since those seem to be less common, 3.31 as a backup option.) I'd just live with it, especially short-term, as I have for the last few years; but recently, it clunks when I put it in 4wd, and then when I shift between drive/neutral/reverse while in 4wd. So I'll obviously get it checked to see if it's something else, but the front differentials have made a humming noise when engaged ever since we swapped them, and the shop supposedly checked all the joints just a couple months ago. So unless it's the transfer case, which I doubt, it's probably the differentials. So if I have to replace it anyway, I might as well change them both at the same time for the new gear ratio. Oh, and the shop wants $2100 for both differentials, parts and labor. But they said labor is "only" $800 -- so that's $650 per differential. Most places online seem to have them for under $300 each. But I was wondering if anybody knew of a place with particularly good prices, or a good reputation or something. - - - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -- If it's really a supercomputer, how come the bullets don't bounce off when I shoot it? -- The Covert Comic - - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org - -------------- _________________________________________________________________ It^Rs the same Hotmail..
