") Dan, Those of us who live west of the cascades in Washington see a dabble of snow once or twice a year. I've lived in this area most of my life and have never seen this much snow for this long. We only see a few days a year below freezing, so when it does snow it is usually around less than 24-48 hours. Now you throw in inexperienced drivers, our horrible traffic, and many hills and mountains and it becomes quite the experience. John's infamous driveway would be considered a mountain pass in your neck of the woods. My house is at 530' above sea level, even though I live within a half-mile from the Puget Sound which is sea-level. There are a lot of steep snow covered roads around here. Comparing your cold temperatures to our two feet of snow in 24 hours is apples to oranges. I've yet to hear anyone "whinin'" about the temperature! I agree we don't have the hills, but John was just starting to sound like one of them thar suthern Caleefornee people -- they start whinin' if it gets below 60deg. Or them folks from Jo-juh, where 1/4" of snow will shut down the entire state. ;) And I'm driving around in 2wd. Turns out what I thought was probably the front differential going out was actually TWO front U-joints going out, despite being checked just a couple months ago. They want $385 to do them both -- apparently, one of them involves pulling out half the axle. Bleh. But when there's no traffic, it's fun to make 90deg turns by turning early and sliding sideways into the lane you want. Power sliding from a stop isn't just a fun thing to do, it's a way of life. ") thanx Joe! :) One has to truly experience BOTH locations and climates to really understand what is happening here. :) I grew up in Wisconsin and Illinois, my wife is from South Dakota. We know cold, we know snow, and now we know "green hills" and rain. We've been up in the PNW since the '70s, first in Klamath Falls for a while, then Portland, then up here since '85. In '96 we saw snow stick around for just over a week or so... but we basically had one snow event, a major one... like 24" worth... BTW Joe, Iowa doesn't have any thing remotely related to mountains, but Dan knows that, he's been to Colorado. :) Iowa has some lovely rolling hills, really a nice place. I got stuck in the upper driveway briefly just now... the snow is getting really slippery and melting... my neighbor parked their WJ in the drive, my daughter parked just a bit back from it with her XJ... I tried to go up and around in the field, but since my wife was with me I didn't go after it will full intent... had to borrow a snow shovel from my neighbor... I'm surprised he had one... he's a Seattle native. :) still getting the pictures from today off my memory card, will upload soon... look for today's date in http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2008 some very beautiful scenery on the drive in... took Lowell-Larimer Road through the Snohomish valley... it runs along the north edge of the ridge that we all live on... top of it is about 500 feet, bottom is about 10 feet above sea level... :) sure is pretty out there right now... late afternoon light on snow covered trees... :) uh, so, who is whining? ;) just make the snow go away so we can see our green trees again, ok? ;) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Wed, 24 Dec 2008, Joe Hughes wrote: # Dan, # Those of us who live west of the cascades in Washington see a dabble of snow # once or twice a year.
