I've been using the web version the last several years. That way, you don't have to mess with purchasing and installing the software, and it doesn't have to do a friggin' update every time you launch it. And I found TurboTax to be _much_ more user-friendly than Tax Cut. Tax Cut seemed to be written _by_ tax professionals _for_ tax professionals. I had no idea what they meant by many of the terms, and I often found that they used four different long technical terms to mean the same thing. If they had simply called it by what was on my forms, or told me where to find it, I would've been fine. TurboTax seems to be written for the average person; most of it (though still not all) is pretty easy to follow. On TurboTax on the web, they have generally not charged until it comes time to file -- so you pay the filing fees, but nothing to fill it out initially. My charges the last four years (for e-filing both state and federal) have been $39.90, $34.90, $55.90, and $59.90, in that order. It's getting more expensive than it should be, IMO, but I figured $50 was pretty reasonable since that's what a tax professional would charge (at least), and they tend to talk in tax professional terms and ask if I have a lot of forms and financial things that I don't have, don't need, and have no idea what they're asking for. Like Tax Cut. And you have to actually meet with them to get them all the forms and things physically. So it's much easier for me to just do it myself on Turbo Tax. (And before I got a mortgage and a retirement account, it was easier to fill out the 1040 myself -- generally took about an hour or less.) I saw an ad on TV where TurboTax claims to have no filing charges, and I thought the web version still claimed to be free. But I don't know what the real deal is; there's no way they'd do it for free, and unfortunately, I can't even believe they'd lower the price. Kinda annoys me that they'd do false advertising like that, but in the end, if they're the only ones that are easy, I'll probably still use them. Unless it gets to be much more expensive, in which case it might be time to go do it myself again. I have a pretty good idea of what I need to fill out now. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How many parents are gonna want to send their kids into the woods _that_ summer? -- Jack - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2009 11:40:30 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: fsj: OT - tax s/w question - TurboTax or TAX ACT? the free versions seem to have limitations, which are expected and not unreasonable... Have decided to keep the '99 WJ and the '91 300d and have one other FSJ project... selling the '94 Blazer, the '86 cj-10a and later the trailer... Superdawg - '83 J10 stepside, or the '67 J100 Panel? I've been planning to rebuild my '83 J10 stepside with the parts from the '80 J10 (3.54 axles and 4.2L engine), and then later convert it to a Diesel... but in asking my son to reduce his fleet (he's got the '74 javelin with the 460, an '85 300D and the '67 Panel... (we're sharing it until he's done with school) he came up with the suggestion that I build the panel instead of giving it to him... He's attached to it but not so much that he would be happy with me having it... he just likes the looks of it... doesn't want us to part with it. So, that has me thinking... '83 J10 Stepside or '67 J100 Panel... from a practical standpoint both need a lot of work... both are rare and cool... both have benefits... the J10 is more to my liking, but not my wife's... the seats can't recline and it can't carry passengers... good point... we both have back troubles and it's important that any vehicle I build up allows her to recline the seat to relieve her back pain if we're going to be out driving for more than an hour or so... so it's important, but not critical since we have the WJ... The panel would be easy to fit the WJ seats in, add a/c, and so on... could even make it into a bit of a camper. ;) the other issue is getting WVO barrels loaded and unloaded... I think a barrel would fit in the back of the panel with the barrel lift... I could make a cargo area in the back that could be easily cleaned... not sure I want to wrestle barrels into the back of a J100 though... being able to stand upright to roll a barrel takes a lot of stress off of my back. Of course I could use that receiver hitch carrier too... just have a really solid hitch... probably the better solution, that's what I did with Omega. If I went with the panel I could make it nice... possibly useful as a daily driver if I used a Mercedes Diesel... I like the platform on top for photography work... I like the barn doors... it's a cool rig. If I went with the J10 I'd be happy, could easily make it a daily driver and use it for photography work as well... easier to get in the bed than on the top... but then there is the issue of the seats not reclining... wouldn't be able to take the J10 on extended trips without making my wife suffer... :( Too bad I'm not more skilled at body work... could make an extended cab J10... don't need a large bed for hauling WVO... have thought about hacking up a Grand Wagoneer before... who knows... making progress... :) have folks interested in the blazer and the cj-10a... so hoping for room in the drive soon... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2009 08:27:27 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: RE: [db] project thoughts...
