Any tips, any pointers? the factory manual clearly states that the engine can be removed without taking the radiator out. have the fan loose already, removed the ps pump, alt, and a/c compressor from the engine... guess I could just attempt to lift the engine out as is... would be nice to have that rad out of the way... done for today... daughter scored some free tickets to the nutcracker, heading down to the eastside in a couple hours for that... the temptation is to rent the tow dolly and drag this thing over to a shop and have them deal with it... oh yeah, need that special tool to get the fuel line off as well... and really have a strong dislike for those connectors with the red safety tab... and having to listen to my son go on about how much easier his '67 fairlane and '74 javelin was to work on and have him asking if we can just break that part off... arrghhhhh.... :) why do I take on these insane projects??? sure I can... learn a lot... but why oh why do I continue to engage in such insanity... a car payment isn't that bad, is it? ;) oh well... thanx for the info... well wishes... time to rotate your popcorn. ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Dec 2009 19:47:31 -0800 From: Jim Blair Subject: RE: fsj: 4.0L removal Haven't done one that new yet. Work has been sucking up a lot of hours and what little time I've had left has been spent on cabin improvements (should be livable full time by summer) and fixing friends/family member's vehicles. I had to take a torch and notch the frame horn on the passenger's side to straighten out my daughter-in-law's '95 XJ enough to mount a new radiator. Now I just need to finish bleeding the clutch on my old '86 MJ and deliver it to have 2 spaces cleared in my yard! I can see it, but it's right by the front support, has to be short socket with a wobble right there... saw some of these at the tranny shop... yes, found them, these are what I need: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tug/2009_May_12-shift-kit-n-NP208-trans-shop/JEM_8732.jpg http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/tug/2009_May_12-shift-kit-n-NP208-trans-shop/JEM_8733.jpg maybe I'll wonder over to sears tomorrow... I bought the fuel line tool at shucks/oreillys, got the $7.99 pack with all the plastic sizes... it was that or pay $14 for one metal one... got both fuel lines off... it was counter intuitive... I was pushing on the plastic tool thinking it would go with the line... it didn't... it stayed on the main tube... had to pull the hose off... weird... I miss hose clamps and normal connections... but not much. Just need to learn the new ways, they are in many ways an improvement. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Sat, 19 Dec 2009, Kevin wrote: # The two most used categories of tools for all three engine extractions were # gear wrenches and wobble extensions. # # On Sat, Dec 19, 2009 at 06:10:28PM -0800, john wrote: # > pulling the front fascia has been considered... but I'd like to leave # > the a/c in place... so there's no point. # > # > I'd like to remove the fan shroud, but there is one bolt (out of 4) that # > is nearly impossible... # > # > I need some really flexible sockets... # ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Dec 2009 12:52:35 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: crazy popcorn adventures... found a Diesel Toyota with a bad transmission... wondering if my AW4 could work? (Jim B? would it?) Kevin... thoughts on this one: http://wagoneers.com/tmp/Diesel_Toy/ALL.html I'll need a transmission... thinking 5 speed is my Aisin Warner 30-80LE won't work. Some minor body work, front fender and hood... The guy is a med student, needs a running vehicle... looks like he'll consider a trade for my '89 XJ. He'll break even on value and should have a good running Jeep for the short term... He hates to part with this thing, just dumped 4k into it... but doesn't have the time or place to work on it... I pointed out that when he's finished with his residency he'll be able to afford a much nicer one... so he feels better now. ;) He won't be back until the 1st... I'll drive by and look at it while he's gone... Anyway, here's what I know: It in an 88 FJ-62 with an 83 BJ 3B diesel swapped into it. I made a homebrew veggie system for it that needs some work, but worked great on the drive up to Alaska. Details: Chasis: 88 FJ-62, 400-500k km. Metallic gray. Frame is rusting through on the inside channels. Body has some rust. Whole front end is warped from going into a pole sideways in Alaska. Interior is fairly nice. Doors are good. Engine: 83 Toyota 3B 3.4L 4cyl diesel. 150k miles (not km), had heads rebuilt 40k miles ago. Don't have compression specs on it, but it was able to accelerate slowly up steep hills. Put out some white smoke on start-up, but doesn't smoke after warming up a couple minutes. Veggie system: Pretty basic, 2nd tank, line-in-line, heated filter, manual switch, all coolant-based heating Tranny: 4 speed, not sure which one. Stuck in 2nd gear I think. Transfer case: Manual 4H, 4L, 2H, N - ------------- this will not replace any operating vehicle I have right now... just swaps the XJ project for this.. it might work out as a straight WVO rig... we'll see... thoughts? pass the popcorn... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #3494 **************************
