I had a chance to go to the wagoneer repository.... vacuum tested the modulator.... it was not even holding vacuum. I plugged the intake manifold hose, fired the beast... which starts really well with 5 year old gas in it, but the oil has barely 30 minutes of run time..... the smoke is practically gone.... and the best part is that it can move.... with the leaky modulator, putting any gear resulted in NO motion. Now it is time to add a voltmeter, and connect the temp gauge, the wiring is history as in cooked wires. I really need a voltmeter, as my battery was indicating a higher voltage when I put it back in the 74, no jumper cable were used in this experiment..... the alternator #1 plug/spade has no wires connected to it?! The "emergency drive" light on my 81 comes up when the center differential on the t-case (NP 219) is locked in. That cluster came out of an 83 which I seem to recall had an NP 229. They may have disabled the light by 83. One way to deal with the fancy aspect would be to swap in the power seats, power windows, power doorlocks, and air conditioning out of a Wag. Do a Cowboy Cadillac J-10. It's been a while since I have been into the under dash vacuum harness, but it's not too complicated. There should be a vacuum reservoir under the hood on the firewall (dash panel if you work in Detroit) that goes to the intake manifold on one side and the switch on the other. (my vacuum reservoir is in a box in the shed...it's not totally necessary) and then there is one vacuum motor which when vacuum is applied diverts air from the defrost position to the floor vents. Without the reservoir the vacuum motor looses vacuum and diverts to defrost every time you get on the gas hard which has been livable for me. Heater should cook you alive. Looks like a few warm days coming up here...40 degrees...need to close two other little work orders and then I can get back into the Wag's frame. Then I will decide exactly how much of my tax return BJ's will be getting. Which brings me to a question on has anybody ever rebuilt their own steering box?
