I am running straight manifold vacuum to my distributor. Checking in the factory service manual with the Motorcraft carb you'd run ported vacuum when the coolant was below 220 degrees and manifold vacuum when it was above 220 degrees...with the idea that you'd get a faster idle and better cooling with manifold vacuum. A bog in a Carter AFB or edelbrock carburetor is fairly easy to diagnose and often has something to do with the jets and the rods in the carburetor not being set up for the application. Edelbrock rods and jets fit a Carter and vice versa. I forget the exact details...if you want I can look them up for you, but I got a Carter Carburetor book at the bookstore that explained what was going on with the carburetor based on vacuum readings...I ran a vacuum hose in through the window and did part throttle and full throttle runs in the mostly abandoned industrial park near where I used to live. This is what I remember...the metering rods are held up in the jets with springs and the rods are pulled down my engine vacuum, when engine vacuum drops due to a full throttle situation the springs push rods up where the narrow section of the rod allows more fuel to pass through. If the engine bogs at a part throttle situation it can be too soft a spring allowing the rod to open too easily or it can be the rod's step is too big. I forget how that read. The Carter/Edelbrock rod system is more durable than a Holley power valve in the event of a backfire. I think they are easier to tune and more street friendly than a Holley as well. Mine was very tractable when I lived at sea level, no bogging in the primary circuit and you could feel the secondaries come open (which didn't happen that often) I haven't yet re-set the carb for 7000 feet where I live now. Out of the box the carb bogged, the secondaries didn't open, nothing really felt right. I spent a couple of afternoons after work playing with it and got it working well. I bought a kit of springs and jets and rods from Summit racing. How many people on the list still use a full size Jeep as primary transportation (or as your only car)?
