I had one that consistently got 40 mpg, another 45. And I drive 'em hard... I flog my rabbits. ;) as best I can tell this pickup I have now is getting in the high 30s... speedo is way off though... haven't found anything really good for vw's... the tdiclub, if you have a tdi. :) just sold the '89 XJ... still have the '00 WJ to sell. any suggestions on how to get mold out of an '85 GW? my son pulled his headliner and condensation has now collected inside... more likely his roof rack is leaking... but either way, he's got mold. the higher voltage on the alternator isn't a problem... put an isolator in line, the diode will drop the voltage a bit if you're concerned... the only time I've had trouble is when the voltage has been too low. :) I'd have to research (remember) a bit... but applying a greater voltage to the battery won't hurt it, it'll only be able to take what it can... the rest will be used by the jeep... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Sat, 6 Feb 2010, Michel Balea wrote: # This small VW has sparked some interest..... there is one for sale locally.... # diesel, 1980 asking $1500. I'll really miss it... super nice cherokee, leather, factory sun roof... tow package... was running great... but a guy can only have so many vehicles... ;) The XJ and the WJ just don't work for me, I am a pickup person I guess... a friend's brother bought it... his xj has a stick and it was killing his back... something about a manual trans in an xj is just plain brutal... not having trouble with the VW stick... still have the '00 WJ for sale... lowered the price and starting to get some interest... there's a lot of nice WJs for sale as well as XJs. Guess I will drive it around a bit... really nice shape... only 28k on the engine... picked up a GTI kit for my Rabbit pickup... air dam, bumpers, fender flares. :) hoping to get the truck painted... need to do some sound proofing, noisy little rascal... when you get on this thing there is a very serious sound in the cab... I may shop around for the a/c part under the dash (is that the evaporator or condensor???) heard from curtis, his health is improving slightly, but not enough to do the painting on superdawg so he's decided to start reassembling... once he gets the engine/trans in the chassis I'll help him with the body... once all the pieces are back in place I will be able drag it home and finish it... if his health improves he may still have a chance to paint it... he's worked hard on the prep work, I know he'll do a better job of painting than I could afford to have done. Either way, once it's all in one piece I can take over... the '99 WJ needs a heater core replaced... the leak stop has kept it from leaking, but the heater doesn't put out a lot of heat... well, not that we really need it... ;) it's in the 50's... rofl. it's the only thing wrong with it right now... it seems to have found it's way into the carport... :) the '91 300d is still lighting up the glow plug light after it's been running, usually a few blocks down the road when I get on it to get on the highway... turns off after a bit... starts up fine, no smoke... has two new glow plugs... guess I need to do the back three yet... rats. otherwise it's doing great... wonderful car. the 124 2.5L turbo Diesel is by far the best Mercedes I've ever owned... solid 30mpg on Diesel in town... fast... quiet... handles like it's on rails... my wife has claimed it as hers... ;) -o|||||o- city/hwy engine/trans/xfr - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1981 VW Rabbit Pickup 35/45 mpg 1.6L Diesel/5spd (Earl) 1991 Mercedes 300D (124) 29/39 mpg 2.5L Turbo Diesel/AT (Shadowfax) 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) 14/21 mpg 4.7L V8/45RFE/NV247 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) 16/20 mpg 4.0L I6/42RE/NV242 <-- For Sale - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1975 Jeep J10 long bed (SJ) hydraulic dump trailer - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1983 Jeep J10 Stepside (SJ) (Superdawg)- under construction getting '80 Scout SD33T Diesel, TF727/NP208 mpg: 20/24 expected - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Feb 2010 19:37:54 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: road safety all I can say to this one is: Amen. http://www.flixxy.com/road-safety.htm ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Fri, 5 Feb 2010, Jim Parker wrote: # This is the most beautiful commercial I have ever seen. No knock sensor after '90. No EGR either. Only way to dial in the newer rigs is with injectors (or in this case, I'd do top quality injector cleaner like 44K) and spark plugs. I would first go to a colder heat range plug (that tends to knock down NOx) and make sure the hose between the MAP sensor and intake is clean. (and adjustable MAP may fatten the mix up a bit and help pass) Throttle body cleaner helps and so does making sure the CCV system is clean. Make sure there is no intake manifold leak. (that will lean the mix) High CO means improperly burning gas. A slow functioning O2 sensor can lean it out, but so can a cat that has a hole burnt through it. One thing the Emissionazi I D 10 Ts didn't think about is the (as of Jan 8th) 20% alcohol content of fuel is destroying catalytic converters by raising the combustion temps too high for them to handle. In effect they are making even more emissions by increasing the NOx numbers and pushing us towards acid rain (which creates more "glowball warning) Jim Blair, Lynnwood, WA '87 Comanche, '83 Jeep J10, '84 Jeep J10 From: john Subject: Re: xj: smog challenge; high NO and CO; likely causes? well, if the rotor contact was loose the spark would have a little less energy, but it seems like you're already burning lean with plugs on the whitish side... are they gapped at .035 now? that would create a "cooler" spark... not many adjustments on a 4.0... since it's a '94 is it spitting up any codes that an be read? you might try the on-off^3 thing or run to a parts store and get a reading... in lieu of the egr the knock sensor might be bad... it would let it run leaner... it must have some control over timing to retard it if you're too lean... if that, or something in that control loop were bad it would allow the engine to burn leaner, creating the higher NOx reading... but I just don't have a good idea of where CO goes in the relationship... I've always been concerned with getting HC down on big old carb'd Jeeps... :) my fuel injection rigs never give me a challenge in emissions... nor do my Diesels, usually... :) john http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/201469230/direct/01/ ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #3527 **************************
