The last time I messed with a shift kit was on a 68 Dodge Coronet, which now that I think about it may well have ALSO been a 727. But that was about, oh, close to 40 years ago and I've not done one since. The one I've got now has a kit in it, but I didn't put it in there.... But as I recall, wasn't too much to it. But my recall isn't all that hot anymore. A couple a balls here, a new hole there, and back together if I remember right... Tips/tricks/things I've forgotten about? And an evil thought just crossed my mind. Don't need the core on the junk tranny... can I just pull the shiftkit parts out of the old tranny and put them in the newer one?? The dinosaur (79 D300 dually) has a big block and 727. 727 has a stage 2 transgo kit in it, since it used to pull lots of heavy stuff. PO did the kit, was supposedly very easy. He had to turn the line pressure down to keep from eating universal joints, but that's another story. Biggest thing to remember with an FSJ with a 727 (or 999 for that matter) is letting it sit in park will not cool it down, as fluid flow is different in park than neutral. You probably know this with a shift kit on a coronet, but it's worth pointing out nonetheless. Shift kits are under $200. I don't know that I'd try to take one out of a failed transmission. You might try a local speed shop to see if they'll rebuild yours - might come out cheaper (or the same price) as getting a rebuilt, and you'd get to specify kit.
