You have to thread the holes in the head because they don't have any from the factory except the front and back. '81 has an issue with sticky valves in #1 or #2 cyl due to a factory flaw. No prob with the heavier flywheel. All AMC inline 6 cyls are zero balance. If I ever build an AMC V8, it'll be zero balanced too! Get a 4.0L timing cover and cam bolt/button setup. Motor may have been pulled due to cam walk. The High Vol pump has been known to cause some issues due to fitment with the dist drive pushing too far into them. Regular pumps work fine and I've not heard of any failure with them, even in the most extreme situations. I've gotten 21.3 with my wj's after full conversion to amsoil and on relatively level runs, even including 70mph stretches. However, none of those runs were on flat and level terrain. But I'm not moving to hot/humid/frigid/salted roads to get level ground so my mileage gains have to be over varying elevations. My 10 mile commute starts at 350 feet and goes up and down to 600 feet. If I alter my commute by one mile I will drop all the way to sea level. But the biggest problem is stoplights. Lots of them unsynchronized. Grrr. If I take a longer route I can do freeway speeds but then double the distance, but it would have very few lights, but could be an ugly traffic mess across a 2 mile long trestle across the snohomish river that feeds into a very congested section of I-5. But that's a math problem for later, first I'm going to work up a cost model showing how it's more cost effective to keep the 14 mpg WJ over a 40mpg VW, Y'all ready for THAT math? :). Variables include wife's errand runs, my commute, said WJ costs, 300d costs, and vw costs, including insurance, tabs and fuel. There is no argument that the 91 300d is a better car than the 03 jetta, with only 10mpg difference in town the jetta's days appear numbered, but we're getting into popcorn territory, get the butter ready. :) Saturday calculations, speculations and Diesel dreaming to follow. Need more info on the chip for the WJ for economy!!! Need the list suggestions to set my 4.7 up for in town economy. Have 100% amsoil and a free breathing amsoil air filter that is superior to a k&n in both protection and flow, but not a cold air setup. All stock. Mpg is the objective, not performance. What plugs should be used? I am pretty sure I can pull about 22-24 mpg out of my WJ on the highway if I can control my speed. It does quite well at 55-60 mph but at 70 mph it appears to get less than 20 mpg. ;-) So if this device can pull another 13% in economy, it might be worth it. BUT if it causes problems, like excessive DTCs or engine damage, then I will pass. I prefer reliability over the chance of slightly better economy with my WJ. My 28 year old Audi usually gets 24 mpg just in the city but it needs a paint job to be pretty again. I have not owned a diesel for about 23 years and now I am leaning towards getting one again, unless I go with electric.
