I talked with my son about putting my SD33T into a wrangler... made the comment it was lighter than my J10 and he disagreed... if it is, it's not by much.. neither the wrangler or a j10 offer creature comforts or pasenger space, or dry storage... :) BUT, a Cherokee (XJ) does... this article is interesting, despite the lack of tech info: http://hubpages.com/hub/My-Neighbors-40-MPG-Jeep-Wrangler-Diesel-Conversion the other article below is also interesting as it starts to discuss swaps... I have considered liberties but cannot get over the ugliness, poor handling, limited cargo space, uncomfortable seats and so on...they are cheaper in diesel form than a grand cherokee, and the wk gC is also less of a jeep than a wj or xj... IFS, further reduced visibility... however, I'd take one if I could afford it. at this point, popcorn ready, going to dive into excel to do the math on my current fleet scenario... '99 wj, '91 300d and '03 jetta tdi... considering use, insurance and tabs I'm thinking that I can actually save a couple hundred a year by getting rid of the VW! My J10 is still not done, but whether finished by curtis or me, it's still in the plans... long term plan, Diesel Grand Cherokee and my Diesel J10. However, the idea of a TDI into a Cherokee is one to consider... xJ folks, any idea on how a TDI could be mated to an AW4? REQUIREMENTS for inclusion in the Snohomish Fleet are as follows: (automatic and a/c are mandatory) 1)* automatic transmission (I can drive a stick, but back injuries limit the vehicles, and my wife will not drive a stick, traffic and terrain is tough enough here) 2)* air conditioning - a must for me, allergies/sensitivies 3) WANT Diesel 4) WANT towing up to about 5,000lbs 5) Like sunroofs but with the troubles with older vehicles not important 6) carry 4 adults - not a hard requirement for commuting 7) dry storage and cargo capability (tool box in bed ok) 8) quiet interior 9) good seats that recline (complicates the J10 for more than commuting ) off to excel to do some math... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Sat, 8 Jan 2011, dave wrote: # And I think I have seen one of those TV automobile shows, years ago, install # some modifications to an American-made Diesel Truck and gained a tremendous # amount (20% or more maybe) of both power and economy. Looking at vehicle costs and various options... currently have three vehicles and wondered if the costs could be reduced by getting rid of one. We don't want to give up the WJ because it's a 4x4 that can tow... at least until my J10 is done. We don't want to give up the 300d because it's an excellent car. The VW is economical, but has a manual transmission and costs more to insure. For now we'll be sticking with all three vehicles, but not driving the WJ very often. Once my J10 is finished and working properly it will replace the VW without hesitation, and likely the 300D as well, leaving us with the J10 and the WJ. At some point in time a newer Grand Cherokee Diesel, or some other 4x4 4 passenger Diesel will replace the WJ. If you're interested in the original spreadsheet it's in the tech section of Diesels on my server. the info is formatted and in color at: * http://johnmeister.com/DIESELS/Jan2011-fleet-summary.pdf* The J10 / WJ scenario is the best 2 car plan if using bioDiesel/WVO... variables involved... miles, fuel costs, use of biod/WVO, insurance, tabs. variables: miles, fuel costs, insurance, tabs *FUEL * GAS: *$3.05 * Diesel: *$3.54 * * * /His miles/ /Her miles/ *weekly* *212* 71 *wj, j10 (biod 50%)* *_2,554.83 _* a *WJ* $46.19 $15.47 *wj, vw* *_2,695.21 _* b *300D* $26.80 *$8.98 * wj, vw, 300d *_2,782.26 _* c *VW - TDI* *$19.75 * $6.61 wj, 300d *2,964.17 * d J10 - SD33T at $41.69 $13.96 d J10 - SD33T AT - w/50% biod / WVO $20.85 $6.98 e XJ - 2.1L TD $28.86 $9.67 * * use city mileage to compute gallons used * fuel costs (weekly) *CURRENT FLEET:* *city* hiway est value/cost ins costs tabs a 1999 WJ 4.7L AT AC 4x4 *14* 19 6.5k $281 $80 b 1991 300D 2.5L TD AT AC *28* 34 5k $342 $80 c 2003 Jetta TDI 5sp AC *38* 45 7k $437 $80 d 1983 J10 SD33T AT AC *18* 22 1k $250 $70 e /1986 xj 2.1L 5spd ac 4x4/ */26/* /32/ /2-4k/ /$250 / /$80 / /FIXED SOLUTIONS BELOW - for variable calculations use next tab/ *VW / 300D / WJ* *cab* *weekly* total w/ fuel + *BASELINE 3 cars- CURRENT* vehicles *fuel costs* ins + tabs HIM c *_$19.75 _* *_1,536.07 _* HER b *_$8.98 _* *_885.18 _* 3rd vehicle (tabs/ins + 20 mi/wk) a *_$4.36 _* *_585.83 _* TOTAL *cab* *_$33.08 _* *_3,007.09 _* w/miles 2782.26 w/o delta over current *_ _* *_ _* *FUEL * GAS: *$3.05 * Diesel: *$3.54 * *TWO VEHICLES - VW and WJ vs. 3 vehicles - SAVE $87.04/yr at prices and miles above* *VW / WJ* ** *weekly* total w/ fuel + two cars - VW and WJ vehicles *fuel costs* ins + tabs HIM c *_$19.75 _* *_1,536.07 _* HER a *_$15.47 _* *_1,159.14 _* *_$- _* *_- _* TOTAL ** *_$35.22 _* *_2,695.21 _* delta over current *_$6.49 _* *_(87.04)_* *TWO VEHICLES - 300D and WJ vs. 3 vehicles - INCREASE $181.91 / yr* *300D / WJ* ** *weekly* total w/ fuel + two cars - 300d and WJ vehicles *fuel costs* ins + tabs HIM b *_$26.80 _* *_1,805.03 _* HER a *_$15.47 _* *_1,159.14 _* *_$- _* *_- _* TOTAL ** *_$42.27 _* *_2,964.17 _* delta over current *_$13.54 _* *_181.91 _* *TWO VEHICLES - J10 (50%biod) and WJ - save $227.43 / yr* *J10 - 50% biod / WJ* ** *weekly* total w/ fuel + two cars - J10 and 300d vehicles *fuel costs* ins + tabs HIM d *_$20.85 _* *_1,395.69 _* HER a *_$15.47 _* *_1,159.14 _* *_$- _* *_- _* TOTAL ** *_$36.31 _* *_2,554.83 _* delta over current *_$7.59 _* *_(227.43)_* *TWO VEHICLES - J10 (50%biod) and 300d (pump) - save $501.38 / yr* *J10 - 50% biod / 300D - pump* ** *weekly* total w/ fuel + two cars - J10 and 300d vehicles *fuel costs* ins + tabs HIM d *_$20.85 _* *_1,395.69 _* HER b *_$8.98 _* *_885.18 _* *_$- _* *_- _* TOTAL ** *_$29.82 _* *_2,280.87 _* delta over current *_$1.10 _* *_(501.38)_* *TWO VEHICLES - VW and 300D - SAVE $361 /yr at prices and miles above* *VW -pump / 300D - pump* ** *weekly* total w/ fuel + two cars - VW and 300d vehicles *fuel costs* ins + tabs HIM c *_$19.75 _* *_1,536.07 _* HER b *_$8.98 _* *_885.18 _* *_$- _* *_- _* TOTAL ** *_$28.73 _* *_2,421.26 _* delta over current *_$- _* *_(361.00)_* *TWO VEHICLES - J10 (pump) and 300d (pump) - costs $574.30 / yr more than current * *J10 -pump / 300D - pump * ** *weekly* total w/ fuel + two cars - J10 and 300d vehicles *fuel costs* ins + tabs HIM d *_$41.69 _* *_2,471.38 _* HER b *_$8.98 _* *_885.18 _* *_$- _* *_- _* TOTAL ** *_$50.67 _* *_3,356.56 _* delta over current *_$21.94 _* *_574.30 _* - -- ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2011 15:01:37 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: need an Automatic for an '86 XJ w/2.1L Turbo Diesel any chance of finding an automatic transmission for the Renault 2.1L Turbo Diesel in a 4x4 Cherokee?
