You can replace it with several other V6 GM engines (3.2, 3.4 and 3.8L come to mind) the bellhousing is also the same as the more powerful later model Jeep 4 cyl. (used right up to '99!) The earlier GM 2.5L in '80-'82 AMC Cars and Eagles is the same bellhousing as Chev V8, and a 4.3L conversion in XJs is becoming common using parts from that set up. The tranny is either a 904 or 998 Chryco with AMC case. I broke 3 torque converter necks in my Eagle (motor now resides in Elmo, and according to some casting #s, it may be a Mexican 282! It came from a CJ in Taos originally, and has the most power of a 4.2L I have ever had the pleasure of owning so far (as well as the best gas mileage!) From: fatmac99-at-mindspring.com Date: Hi all. I've been debating whether or not to buy a small Cherokee as a driver, so as to get decent gas mileage and still be able to haul a little bit. My search for a 70s vintage Wagoneer continues. My question is what is wrong with the 2.8 litre V6? A friend of mine had an 85 with that and a 5speed. It had 150,000+ last I knew, and going strong. I used to have an S-10, same setup, and it was purring like a kitten when I sold it at 145,000. Very satisfied, even knowing that Chevy isn't the best V6 maker. I went with traffic pulling out onto highway 9 the other morning... So I wound up Superdawg a bit and sorta dumped the clutch and mashed the go pedal at the same time... surprise surprise surprise... we did the sideway squeal, nicely controlled, smooth even... I kept the demand for power up as I banged through the gears leaving a nice puff of black smoke each time the gear changed... The times before just one wheel, usually the right rear would break loose... guess the l/s only works when turning left under hard acceleration... ;) Really need to get a smaller carb on this puppy... I called Olympic. $75 for a "rebuildable" carb, $65 for the manifold... James, if you're gonna be around tomorrow I can swing by to swap the steering wheel and I guess I'll take ya up on the offer on that manifold. :) Anything else you need? Not sure what time we'll be coming by. Gotta go to Camano Island and Bellevue... they're not exactly close to each other either... ;) ttyl, john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com ...don't leave life without Jesus, please! Nice truck. I have a clean and bone stock J10. 1985 with only 36k miles. I would like to get some things done and am interested in the Holly TBI you mentioned on your website. Have you done that job yet and what do you think about it if you did. Do you know of a source of factory service manuals? I've been also looking for an A/C unit for mine. Thanks and keep in touch. R. Kriz kriz-at-rci.rutgers.edu <<<< wow. only 36K... I know it's not a stepside though, they quit doing those in '84. :( I sold the Holley TBI to the Jeep dealer. It was the old analog version and I couldn't fit it on my Clifford manifold. I suppose I should have gotten the stock manifold, oh well... I'm trying to decide what to do, I'm gonna get a stock manifold from a friend pretty cheap and then try and find a smaller carb for Superdawg. Right now he has a large 2v Holley... when I get on it I can see black puffs of smoke out the tailpipe, which is pretty much black all the time... With gas prices expecting to hit $2.00/gallon here by July I want to get the mpg back up to at least stock range. :) Shop manuals are available through a few sources. You may get lucky with the dealer or Dyment pubs. Otherwise there are folks selling reproduction copies (something I should consider doing since I have a wide range of manuals right now too... :) I'm looking for a 1983 shop manual and have a new 84 or 85 shop manual that's pretty close... I bought it on ebay. I recommend shopping there, just wait till near the end of the auction to bid so the price doesn't go platinum.... I watched one 83 shop manual sell for $125!!!! Out of control. :) I'd love to see some pictures of your J10. I'm working on a book on FullSize Jeeps and am starting to do the freelance writing thing for print magazines. I've been doing web page stuff for years... Finally someone convinced me to start peddling my stuff. :) Now, I just need to send this email, take care of my ebay stuff, and all the other stuff and start working on the articles. :) Oh, on the a/c, easy swap in from any GW.
