Jerryrigged..? juryrigged.. ? I was trying to explain this to my wife, whose brother is named Jerry, and I thought that would be sufficient, but it wasn't. What is the correct spelling and is there an origin ? Like attaching a jerry can ? - - Landon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 12:56:33 -0800 From: john Subject: Re: fsj: A Jeep term ?? Jerry cans is a sort of a slight against the Germans. In WWII they refered to the Germans as "Jerry". They carried their fuel in cans like these... or at least that's what I've heard. Jury rigging is a term from the US West, old days, that is... when folks would "rig" the jury for the outcome of their choice... might have been an East Coast thing... but I'm pretty sure it's from the 1800's either way. At least that's what my feeble memory provided on instant recall... ;) Y'all are welcome to jump in here with the correct or updated version. Other variations of the jury rigging term often involve various slights to a variety of ethnic or racial types... african-engineering, bohemian-engineering, are two that aren't too rude... typically implying "creative" low cost solutions that have a wide degree of success in the areas of reliability, safety and cosmetic value... :) Sometimes you look at something and it might work but it even transcends the typical non-PC term and is promoted to either a Rube Goldberg design, or a Rubik's Cube. later, john At 02:21 PM 3/3/00 -0600, Landon Tesar wrote: >Jerryrigged..? > >juryrigged.. ? > >I was trying to explain this to my wife, whose brother is named Jerry, >and I thought that would be sufficient, but it wasn't. My brother had a Holley 390 on a Clifford manny on the 300cu.in six in his '66 F*rd super-Econoline postal van (no windows), and it worked great for him. Unlike me, his driving-style is "stomp-n-romp", but he still got over 15mpg in that giant shoe-box. We used that thing as a moving-van a couple of times, once pulling a full load of furniture up into the San Bernardino mountains, and it had superb low-end grunt. > Also, there is a 450cfm Holley 4v someone is selling...
