From: "evanlee" Subject: fsj: carb kit blues! Howdy all, Been away from the list for awhile after a computer crash and getting rea= dy to head for Death Valley next week. Ran into something that we should all know about. I had bought a rebuild kit for the carb on my '69 Wagoneer about 6 months ago, and now that the trip is imminent I finally got around to actually rebuilding= it. The kit I got was Hygrade #371B, for the 350 Buick motor for 1969. When I dissasembled the carb I knew there was something wrong because I was having some flooding problems I assumed was associated with the float level. Well, according to the instruction sheet that came with the carb, the float level for my carb was supposed to be 1-11/32 inches. Well, mine was set about an inch high! I checked the latest Chilton to = double check, and it says the setting should be 1-5/32. So, I reset the = float, installed the rest of the kit, and off I went to Las Vegas. The vehicle ran ok, but seemed to have lost a little power, but by the = time I got back from Vegas, it was running pretty poorly, then it started miss= ing real badly. I got to looking at all the info I had, and even the paperwork that came = with the kit, and I have found an apparently serious error in the Chilton= and Hygrade's specs. I have an old Motor's manual from the early 70's that = lists my carb number for a '69 Buick 350 motor, and the float setting for it = is 15/32!! I got to looking at Hygrade's specs, and for the Buick 350, with my carb = number, it says 15/32!! Why would the Jeep (Buick) 350 have such a radically dif= ferent setting than the Buick (Buick) motor of the same year and carb number? I worked on the ole' Waggy until about 11 PM last night, and reset the = carb to the Buick specs, and it idles and runs smoother than it ever has! When = I took the lid off the carb, the fuel was barely over the jets! Either my motor has a different Rochester carb than what came from the = factory, or the Chilton and Hygrade specs are WRONG! One thing came to mind, if the setting is 15/32, and someone made the "1" into a big number by = mistake, it becomes 1-5/32 as listed in the Chilton book, but the 1-11/32 that is = listed in Hygrade's spec sheet is a total mystery!
