My '83 Wagoneer (w/360) lost about half a gallon (maybe a little more) of coolant from somewhere. The coolant is all over the inside of the engine compartment. I tried today to get it to leak so I could fix it, but the thing wouldn't leak. I filled it up and got it as hot as I could, and nothing. I ended up installing a brand new exhaust damper valve as a spacer cause I couldn't pull the y-pipe quite up to the manifold. I never had one of these valves before and I figured I could earn points with SWMBO next winter if I put one in. The local jeep guru said there were two types and he only had one in stock. He was going home so he left it with his daughter for me to pick up. It looked right so I took it. Now I have a low rpm knock and am wondering if it's cause the valve isn't opening very well. I checked the timing and it was dead on. If the pipe is too hot to touch shouldn't the valve be full open? The valve design seems a little different than the one pictured in my Kaiser TSM. I installed it so that gravity would help it open and it seemed to be pretty much the only way it would go in anyway. I had to grind a little off the un-weighted end of the arm to get it to clear the starter. I know most people just wire the valve open or knock the flapper out and use it as a spacer. Although I'm not into crawling under the rig once a week to see if parts are still working, it sure would be nice if I could get this one to work right for a little while. It rubs on some FSJ's and you can get a hard to find leak. I cut a sleeve from an old hose to protect the new one from chafing. 2. The water pump bypass hose. Check clamps, if they are OK, take the hose off and check it. I always carry a spare, because this has been a problem both with my FSJ and with my Chrysler cars. 3. Check for a leak between the water pump and the timing cover.
