I thought that there might be interest from memebers of these three lists for a Jeep Journey up to Death Valley Memorial Day weekend. No takers? Original message pasted in below, contact me off list if yours plans may ahve changed and you'd like to join the expedition. Best wishes, Richard Truesdell Contributing editor, JP Magazine 1964 Kaiser Jeep Wagoneer 1969 Kaiser Jeep Super Wagoneer 1980 AMC Jeep Wagoneer Subj: ATTENTION CA - AZ - NV JEEP ENTHUSIASTS Date: 5/13/00 I would like to extend an invitation to other CA, NV and AZ Jeep enthusiasts to take part in a project that I have planned for over the Memorial Day weekend. For JP Magazine, JJournal.net and overseas publications I'm planning another airplane wreck recovery expedition. I will start up from Orange County early on the morning of Saturday 5/27 to Monache Meadows SW of Olancha off US 395. Research has told me that there is an abandoned fishing/hunting camp with an airstrip nearby. According to my book Aircraft Wrecks in the Mountains and Deserts of California, there are possibly several wreck sites that are within short hiking distance. Depending upon the time required to get to this site, afterwards I hope to visit the ghost town at Cerro Gordo before heading towards Death Valley. The plan will be to stay just outside the park at the Panamint Springs "Resort" Saturday ($60) evening. For Sunday I am currently scouting and researching several possible crash sites within the park boundaries as well as several rated 4WD trails. In addition, by Memorial Day weekend it is possible that several automobile companies will have already started hot weather testing of future 2002 - 2004 models so I plan on keeping my eyes open for photo opportunities. Maybe the new Jeep KJ Cherokee replacement will be testing. Sunday evening I plan to stay within the park at either the Furnace Creek Ranch ($90) or Furnace Creek Inn ($150). Believe it or not there is a golf course at Furnace Creek and I'm considering, as a photo opportunity, playing 9 holes early Monday morning so if you're a golfer, I suggest bringing your clubs. Monday I plan to explore several different sites in the park before heading south on CA 127 to Shoshone where on a previous expedition my girlfriend and I recovered several pieces of an SR-71 Blackbird that crashed north of town in December of 1969. This is my backup photo opportunity in the event that no other sites are located and documented Saturday or Sunday. A possible meeting place will be Saturday morning near Ontario Airport since my partner will be flying in for the weekend. If all goes well, we'll be able to depart from Ontario before 9:30, which should give plenty of time to cover all of Saturday's objectives before sundown. At this point I'm not sure if I'm going to take out my recently painted 1969 Super Wagoneer or request a new Jeep vehicle from DaimlerChrysler's LA press fleet. I suspect that if a new Jeep is available, I'll probably go in that direction although I'd really like to take my Jeep. I think that I might have greater success placing the story in overseas markets if I select a vehicle that a visitor/tourist to the region can rent from one of the major rental car companies. IF you've ever visited Death Valley in the summer, you already know that it is a popular destination for Europeans, especially Germans. This is over and above all the Audi, BMW, Mercedes and VW engineers that populate the park during the hot summer months. If you are interested in joining Rita (who wrote the M-715 story in the May 200 issue of JP Magazine) and me for part or all of the weekend, please e-mail me off-list or give me a call at 714/695-1785 or 714/342-8223. I'm thinking that a variety of Jeeps, up to a half dozen would be optimum but I'm not putting any limit on the maximum. I'm thinking that a group of a dozen or more Jeep enthusiasts, including families, will make this a great way to spend the long weekend. The itinerary is flexible and if you're familiar with the region, I'm certainly open to suggestions to modify the itenerary. If anyone on the list has made the trip to the fishing/hunting camp at Monache Meadows and is familiar with the route and trails I'd appreciate it if you can drop me a note and advise me of any obstacles that you know of along the route. Look forward to hearing back from many of you. Well many thanks to everybody for their input... but it's done! Just got the litter spread to clean up the mess.... What finally helped me "get it" was a suggestion that I use a nut driver & socket to set the bolts all around the pan, snug them a little at a time over 4-5 rounds, dry only with a cork gasket. Then using the tightness of the other bolts; "the feel" of them as a guide, use a small ratchet handle on those 4 over the crossmember. Snug up the pan, till it feels like the cork is tight, but not too far... Pulled the other pan and had to laugh, but durn it, I KNEW that it was overtight while I was doing it, but the book called for.... The cork is mashed all to bits in several places... Just goes to prove the point that a good mechanic KNOWS what to do and those in my league know what they're SUPPOSED to do. Or at least I THINK I know... Experience is so obviously the best teacher, why do I keep testing it...? Also shoulda killed that pesky oil pan leak, BUT it took a 2x oversize plug to do it... booo. Now if I get the steering gear box leak stopped and the other general engine oil seepages of undetermined origins fixed... it'll be leak free! BAH HAHAHAHHHAAH what a fool... I gotta get some rest... That was a minor glitch in what I was saying! I meant not responsible for the emission levels the manufacturers refused to cut. Off Road damage is another story, and I tread lightly also! I wrote this in Delphi forums today: =A0=A0=A0SUV owners are not responsible for the environmental problems caused by their vehicles Michael=A0Shimniok wrote: Err... uhh... not to start a war, just discussing. I DO feel very much responsible for any impact I and my Wagoneer have on the environment-- off-road. That's why I always try my best to tread lightly, and to haul off trash from the wilderness instead of leaving it behind. How many extremist environmentalists go out on trail cleanup duties? The following is aimed at the environazis who would convince everyone that I and others like me in my heavy, fuel-inefficient V8 powered vehicle should be dragged out into the town square and shot (not burned, as that would create harmful emissions). I am not convinced that my vehicle is the cause of any significant environmental damage, given all the tests I must pass and all the emissions gear designed to reduce its emissions significantly, and given the many other sources of pollution. There are several facets to the issue of emissions and environmental preservation. First, the battle should be fought in other countries that don't give a rip about the environment and have no standards or controls in place. Mexico City isn't at the bottom of the entire world's clean air list because everyone drives SUVs. Second the battle should be fought against companies that pollute the environment here and abroad rather than against hapless individuals. Third, if we as humans continue to grow in population and continue to spread out over the land (in America, anyway) taking no responsibility for our population or our land and resources use there won't be much of an environment left to protect outside of National and State Parks. But that's ok, because we'll die of thirst due to water overuse or find our demise in the overuse of some resource or another... Fourth, fight the battle in the arena of housing construction, since so many excellent practises are possible to reduce energy consumption of a house by a significant margin. Anyone who owns a typical refrigerator, which runs at an astonishing 1500W day in and day out, has little business on the environmentalist soapbox. Not counting the dozens of other devices we use to waste energy. Not counting the dozens of things we buy that come in packages that we throw away which goes into landfills and degrades at least sometime before the sun burns out. Finally, at least in my city, lots of work could be done on public transportation to encourage folks to use their cars less. I for one like living near my work and don't do a lot of distance commuting daily so I really don't use a great deal of gas and therefore don't pollute as bad as if I were living 30 miles away and commuting in 5mph highway traffic. Unfortunately, the American culture is one in which independence in one's vehicle is prime. Perhaps we should work with this very ingrained cultural practise and encourage more LPG conversions, and bonuses or benefits for alternate fuels or hybrid vehicles beyond the right to use the HOV lane. I would seriously consider LPG as a viable option if I knew I could fuel up before and after the trail run and knew that I could be unequivocally exempt from the hassles and expenses of emissions testing. It's cheaper, far cleaner burning than gasoline, but hard to come by. Perhaps licensing and tax rebates or even exemptions on hybrid vehicles (gas/electric) would help. Frankly I like my truck, I enjoy four-wheeling and many other hobbies and I'm damned sick of people coming along telling me I'm not politically correct and that I must abandon my own personal pursuit of happiness because they say so. A smattering of hard thinking could produce some viable, helpful compromises. We have a lot of areas in which we could make some big differences. Why pick on me? Michael - --- Michael E. Remember last fall I traded my 77 Wagoneer for a camera and an expensive bike? Well, if I hadn't done that I'd never have even considered the Olympus. I got the DL320 in the trade. It's a fixed lens, does pretty good. 1024x960 in high res. But they tend to eat batteries... so I bought rechargeables and it's working fine. :) Then I decided I really wanted the DL450, with the 3x zoom... got my tax return and then went looking at Costco to find one... no luck, well, luckier really... they had the DL460, it came with some rechargeable batteries and a couple other features the DL450 doesn't have. Costco sells 'em at $499.00, I've also seen 'em in the elinux.com catalog for the same price. I don't like the DL460 as much as the DL320 for taking pictures under the rig though... that lens sticking out and trying to adjust the telephoto isn't easy... So I crawl underneath with the DL320. :) BTW, the 460 has several resolutions and all kinds of other bells and whistles. It does 640x480 for SQ and 1280x960 HQ, but it also does something more than the 320 (which also has the same res modes) and that is it'll do SHQ and SHQ-TIFF. In other word it'll create monster files. :) The optical qualities of the Olympus is what drew me toward them. I have had trouble with the 320, have an engineer at work that does a lot of model design for our handheld scanners and has fixed some mechanical problems. :) Of course I keep his UNIX design workstation purring along nicely... ;) The other benefit of the Olympus is they are compatible with LINUX!!! :) I'm using the Flash Path Disk with Windoze. I guess when I swing over completely to Linux I'll have to use the serial cables unless I find a driver for the Flash Path... could happen. :) Anyway, bottom line, the Olympus Digitals have been working very well for me for automotive photography. I've gathered pictures for a few articles recently with them... One of my recent favorite ones is those lights on my main web page... :) Not sure why I like it... I'm sure I'll tire of it soon enough... Shoot, I only changed my main page three times in the last 24hrs... rofl... :) One other thing on the Digitals, they are a little slow... the 320 is worse than the 460 though... I mean you point, aim, hit the shutter and it takes a few seconds time to shoot!!! Yikes, I've missed a bunch of shots with it... I'm used to a 35mm... on the other hand, I've probably saved enough in film to make a good down payment on the DC. :) Tomorrow, Swap Meet in Monroe, WA... gotta run, john - ------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.WAGONEERS.com/johnsjeeps.jpg SuperDawg, SuperPup (the little wagoneer), and the J3000 ...don't leave life without Jesus, please! Did you cure the rough running problem? Once that's cured, you should see an increase in MPG. Poor manifold vacuum means poor gas mixing and lower gas mileage. Those of you with poor vacuum should check your timing chain for slop (I could almost take Elmo's off when I first got it! My MPG went up almost 5mpg with a new chain!) =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Other than that, float level, or blown powervalve account for the bad mileage.
