A: I'm home again! Don't know if you could see the hole in the cover, but I poured a pint of oil in before I left, and jammed a small piece of rag in the opening (I couldn't find my black silicone, and I was in a hurry to go get my son from Canada) I had a couple other MacGyver moments too! I pulled out onto the road from my yard, and the flex of the body forced the exhaust against the oil pan, and snapped a stud off. I grabbed an old E brake cable and twisted it through the hole to keep the pipe up. It wasn't exactly quiet, but I had ear plugs already, because the Model 20 is the one that Q-no-lube sent me on my way without any oil in it! (120 miles, no oil! It was red hot before I opened the cover and sprayed it with Bitron to get me home and to my regular Q-Lube.) I was showing off for my son and his girlfriend by putting Elmo in low range and popping a wheel off the ground at the traffic light, til it went green, and I smoked the tires for about 10 feet (til I hit drive), and then I smelled that awful something on the exhaust, and Elmo started cutting out. I pulled to the side, and what do I see when I open the hood? The battery my son forgot to fasten down (he swapped my battery into the '88 XJ because the other one couldn't handle the draw of the stereo) leaning against the alternator, and it held the heater hose into the blade where it got chewed through, spilling my nice new antifreeze! :^( To make matters worse, it was my new hose, which didn't have a flush connector in it and I didn't have one in my getcha back box! This happened at the on ramp for the Mission bridge in BC, where it's a bit of a trudge anywhere at 9PM to get anything for repairs. I dug around in the back, because none of the other hoses were long enough to jump from front to back to bypass the heater. What did I find? My little whisk broom with a hollow handle. 5 minutes later I had the hose cut off at the bad spot, and the piece of pipe put in and clamped. Held all the way home too! I couldn't immediately find my roll of wire (too much parts in the back. My Hydro-boost brakes, with 2 PS pumps, 2 alts, and my AC pump as well as misc items) so I hooked the carrying handle over the RH hood catch. The battery doesn't go anywhere now! It was running a little badly on the way home, but tomorrow AM, I'm going to clean out the dist cap. I think it may be full of antifreeze, which is causing a short out! I have to replace the PS return line too, because it sprung a leak just as I got home! I also discovered those lazy #%&&*%-at-# at Q-no-Lube also didn't grease my balljoints like I paid them too! Several folks weighed in with ideas about monitoring some things and stimulated my brain a little. I installed a nice little glass fuel filter and it shows full pumpage in progress as the truck nods off. HOWEVER The timing light test was pretty interesting. Connected at the coil/distcap wire, I presumed it would be pretty much a regular flashing.... but it seemed rather erratic at first and then began to be more stable and in fact was really quite stable and what I originally expected until the engine quit again. I thought the the erratic flashing should be met with rough running, but they didn't seem to follow each other. The truck did/does miss a little, but the miss varies in intensity, frequency, and occurance. I just couldn't conclude that the roughness in the idle was relavant to the erratic pattern of flashing. I think that maybe my rubber band on the trigger might not have been quite tight enough, but eventually as I said, the light was really consistant and the truck was running pretty smooth, then it just up and died. It doesn't normally start to run rougher before it dies. It can be idling real nice and smooth when it drops off. Grandpa used to nod off like that in mid-sentence. Fortunately the Waggie isn't usually smoking like Grandpa did when it nods off. LOL The important point is that the timing light dropped dead and the indicator to coil+ stayed lit. So I interpret this to mean I lost my spark signal either from the ECU for whatever reason, or because the pickup coil in the distributor quit sending signal. Critique? And this begs the question... 1. What does the signal coming out of the pickup coil look like? Is it a current or voltage in the range that I can monitor with test lamps or a meter? My luck I'll need an O-scope... I'd sure like to see if the signal TO the ECU is gone before the Tach signal to the coil(-)... 2. Does anyone know the schematic of the ECU? 3. Is the pickup coil signal all the ECU need so generate Tach signal? It looks to be fun changing the pickup coil assy. 4. Am I right that I am gonna have to pull the distributor if I have to replace the pickup coil? It's nice with the timing light as it becomes easy to tell if she is going to start or not when I crank over the key. No flashie, no startie. Today's test was the 2nd wherein I have not driven the thing at all. In fact I can't really drive it anywhere,... meaning we're down to 2 NON running Jeeps and 1 running Jeep.... I'm starting to fit right in down here... Yesterday, it wouldn't start, I moved wires from one ECU to the other. It started right up. Ran for 10 minutes. Died. I let it sit for 30 seconds. Started right up. Ran for 20 minutes or more. I am feeling for relays to let go and testing connections...pulling the plug on one connector or another and the engine runs on... Then in the process, just standing there looking at the motor, it dies. Then it started right up again. It was all I had time for yesterday.
