I had all these grand plans of installing a CD player in my glovebox, but now I have something like 90 records all in my phone so CD's don't go in the cars anymore. I can listen to my Johnny Cash or my Social Distortion without ever having to flip through a book of CDs. You could bend a glove box liner out of either metal or make one out of fiberglass. Maybe even make a halfway decent cup holder. You could put in a shelf to hold your insurance and registration...or even just a pocket in the door for the papers. I have to think that hybrids and electric cars are going to be big in the future. The lady I spend my time and money on has a Prius and it is a totally user friendly car that gets about 45 MPG. From an engineering perspective I see that iteration of Prius as a proof of concept more than a fully developed design, but it works well. While my collection of old iron is more interesting and more fun and much louder the modern hybrid car is a far superior transportation appliance. (The thought of driving my Wagoneer across the country again seems pretty silly today) I am also pretty sure that the Wagoneer's hood is higher than the Prius's roof. Of course if I had a car like that I would never get to spend any quality time with all the awesome tools that I have spent the last 20 years accumulating. Tools with proper sizes like 9/16 and 1/2 and 5/8. If I wanted to upgrade the SD card in my phone I could probably have about 1000 records on it, but I am not sure there are 1000 records that are worth listening to. Especially when all you really need is Johnny Cash at San Quentin. That and for some reason whenever I am welding stuff thicker than 1/8 I always seem to listen to Tammy Wynette. I don't even have a stereo in the house anymore...just one out in the shop. So I am slowly getting a little closer to getting the new floor in the Wag. I got two other projects out of the way...getting a Model A's engine back together and painting a Pontiac's door so maybe this weekend I can crack open the Wagoneer's floor. I held the patch panels up to the floor today and am starting to think about how I am going to start cutting everything apart. The Wagoneer is infested with rodents again so I am looking forward to fixing all the holes. That and having something to bolt the gas tank to.
