I got the day off work (which means I worked half a day) and the day off work tomorrow. (I work most weekends) So I started up the Wagoneer and moved it into the position where it will remain until it has a leak free engine, new brake pipes across the front, a freshly painted front of its frame, a freshly painted engine and new floors. I have decided to pull the nose and then pull the drive train out nearly complete. As of right now the bumper, the grille, the radiator, the outer front valence, the transmission cooler, the AC condenser and a bunch of other bits are sitting in the yard. There are only the two bolts that hold the front clip to the frame left for the nose to come off. As of right now I have left the front fenders on. There is a fair amount of rust and a few cracks in both my inner and outer valence. Nothing that the MIG welder won't fix though. I also found all the tools and bolts and spacers that I have dropped down the hood catch holes over the years. They were all pretty rusty. I suppose I can take them back to sears and get them replaced. I'll try to upload some pictures tomorrow along with a 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix that I am doing a bunch of paint and body work on. The boxed part of the frame on the passenger side appears to be packed with a mouse nest and there were mouse droppings inside the Jeep. I am pretty excited about this job. Once this is done I think I can plate and register the Jeep and I can drive it again. Of course the fear is that I head down the slippery slope and decide that while this is apart it is not that hard to repair the rust and paint the front fenders and while they are off it is the time to do the rocker panels, and while I am at it I might as well replace the quarter panels and repair the tailgate and re-skin the two bad doors, and it's only money so I might as well repaint the whole thing, and then the interior (which truly is rotten) and the Chrome need to be redone While I am at it does anybody need any pictures of anything? I got going at about noon. I got the rest of the nose apart. Decided that it will be easier to get back together if I pull the fenders....which means a trip down the slippery slope. Got about eight hours of wrenching in. I pulled the engine, transmission and transfer case all in one shot. I am never doing it that way again. The assembly is too long, too hard to balance, and the engine mounts are narrower than they look. When it goes back in the transfer case goes in through the bottom. I have actually estimated hours on this job and so for fourteen hours in I am only half an hour off from my estimate. (I restore cars professionally part time...that and more than a few people seem to think that I am OCD) So...the slippery slope...it'll be easier to get back together if I pull the front fenders. The inner fenders have some collision damage and the outers have some rust in them. And then they have to come off to replace the sills which I have a set of those in the shed. So I will pull the fenders, repair them, and repair the sills. I took a few pics today. Most of them aren't great, because I had the jeep half in the sun and half in the shade. I will upload some of them pretty soon. Gotta do the Pontiac Grand Prix tomorrow. Maybe in the evening I can start scrubbing the engine and pull the bad freeze plugs. That and get the engine in an engine stand and set the transmission and transfer case out of the way. Maybe I can gut the interior tomorrow evening get a feel for just how bad the floor is.
