The first is putting together the storage shed in the backyard that has been there for a month. The heat here has just been too oppressive to get out in the sun and put a metal building together. Seriously, though...I really do think I can get the tailgate working. I looked at the wiring back there and I think I may have found what is supposed to be the 6-wire bundle that hooks into the rear paddle switch. There are 6 wires on one end and a harness plug on the other. Does this sound about right to anyone? I found the harness sitting loose under the rear seat. It looked a LOT like the wiring shown in the Ipendia link/site I found showing how to replace the paddle switch with a DPDT switch. I'll have to take a pic of it and post it up later. Basically, the little harness I found had 6 wires protruding from a small plug at the other end. They were terminated in small loop-end connectors that would have been a perfect fit for the paddle switch terminals shown on that site. the whole wiring assembly was just laying there. I nearly pitched it but now I am very glad I didn't. Isn't one of those wires supposed to be hot all the time? Cascade Loop - or... has anyone seen Rocky and Bullwinkle lately? Hit a suicidal squirrel near the top of the pass on SR20... he ran right into my front wheel... then we hit a couple of deer on SR21 heading out of Grand Coulee on our way to Spokane... we're ok... airbags didn't go off... drove another 80+ miles to Spokane with it... necks are sore, my right foot is bruised from dropping the anchor so hard... there is deer material on the left side of my jetta, but both disappeared without leaving any contact information.... We were on a 60mph road through open country, entered a gentle sweeping left hand turn with a couple side roads coming in, but slowed down to somewhere between 45 and 55 because of some confusing signs... there was a large silo on the corner... as I started exiting the curve two deer jumped out in front... I was on the anchor hard, had the Jetta coming to a quick halt, but not quick enough... all I saw was the body of the deer hitting the left front corner... the chest is what likely hit the light and hood... I was too busy downshifting and standing on the binders to notice that the deer spun around the side of the car and smacked my driver's door as well... my wife saw the deer head going by the windshield... I thought was I was seeing dust or smoke to my left... but it was the deer... the driver's door is creased slightly in the middle, binds when opening, left fender is mangled, headlight broken, but the lights still work... sort of... hood and grille are bent as well, the driver's mirror was moved forward, guess that's where bambi bounced off the side of my jetta wagon... I turned around immediately and aimed the remaining headlight out into the field, went back up to the top of the curve by an intersection, couldn't find any trace of the deer, didn't have any fluid leaks and we were in the middle of absolutely no where... something like 30 miles south of the Grand Coulee Dam and 30 miles north of Odessa... we made it ok to Spokane, will get estimates tomorrow from local body shops and contact the insurance company to see what they'll do... then I'll likely hit a few wrecking yards here in spokane for a headlight assembly at least... Jettas are tough little cars... I've seen much worse damage to other cars at slower speeds... I haven't looked at the Panzer Plate to see if it has any deer bits on it... suspect it helped keep the front end from caving in... saving the radiator/ac and oil cooler... I would've pulled the rear driveshaft and drove home in frontwheel drive and fixed it later. There is a different size ujoint list (2 sizes on the ujoint, commonly called a conversion joint) Tcase MIGHT need a bearing and seal (not too big a deal) Loose u-joint FOILED a 26 hr drive to buy... wrong yoke or ujoint? Posted by: "Jesse" j2sax-at-yahoo.com J2SAX Date: Wed Sep 7, 2011 8:08 am ((PDT)) So I drove 13 hours to pick up a J20 4 spd that I was really excited about and, per the owners description it should have no problem tow dollying my company car back home. I totally believe him and that he was being honest as the truck ran GREAT and he has done a lot of work to it.... however.... On my test drive I felt a pretty prominent vibration in the shifter and floor. Had pretty aggressive tires, but wasn't that... however, the tires probably masked the problem. So I get back to the driveway and notice LOTS of trans grease and T/C fluid slung around underneath. The rear driveshaft had all new ujoints and the axle end was solid but when I grabbed the T/Case end the driveshaft clunked back and forth... maybe 16th or 8th of an inch. What was happening is that the yoke on the T/C was too wide to properly capture the ujoint... you know how it has those little tabs or ears in the yoke seat that keep the ujoint from moving side to side. So, here are my theories and maybe you can whittle these down by experience: 1. It is the wrong ujoint. I can't see this as it is the same part number as the rear one and the fellow even had an extra new joint there that had the same issue. Also, the difference did not seem large enough to go up another ujoint size AND the ujoint was just fine in the driveshaft ears 2. Someone "spread" the yoke during a previous service. Since this is the one that the ujoint simply bolts to, I can't see this... have seen it on the driveshaft but never on an open receiving yoke 3. Someone replaced the yoke with the one that looked similar but isn't quite right- my favorite as it fits all requirements and is an easy mistake for someone shopping a junkyard, though the current owner was not aware of it 4. Any other ideas? I think the T/C would also need to be rebuilt at this point as this fellow has been driving short trips on the interstate regularly and the aforementioned oils tell me this has been taking quite a beating for awhile, though the ujoint itself still felt great.. probably only need to replace the bearings, but as long as you're in there... Your experienced opinion is appreciated... now to continue my empty handed 13 hour drive home... BLAHST! Regardless, it was great meeting another good FSJ'r who has put a lot of time and love into his rig!
