Subject: fsj: not how you want to see your transmission...

the pictures below are typically NOT how you want to see your automatic transmission... :)

but, in case you ever wondered what was in an automatic transmission,
well, at least as installed in a 2002 vw jetta TDI with the 01m transmission here you go:

 	http://fotomeister.us/2011/11-Nov-16-VW-JettaAutoTransmission/ALL.html

those flat (or supposed to be flat) pieces are clutches... they are supposed to
have material on them (some or all?)

you can see the tech pointing to the chips in the teeth in the ring gear and other issues... you
can also see temper colors in the metal... that means things got really hot in there...
one of those clutches was quite warped... all the material from the clutches ended up in the
cooler which caused a cascading failure...

in having the tech show me all the parts he noticed another part he had to order... my guess
is a lot of these parts were bad before things started failing... but at least they're fixing them.

the internals of those gears kind of broke and then engaged full on... if I hadn't put
the car in neutral when I slowed down it would have killed the engine...

so now we're just waiting on parts... maybe next week...

the tech is interested in getting a TDI... with a manual transmission... ;) and
was talking to me about some of the performance mods, we both agreed this TDI with
an 01M is not a suitable platform for more power, but the manual trans version is... best bang
for the buck I can think of is dropping the 11mm pump into the manual trans version,
easy 20% power increase... recommended "myturbodiesel.com" as a good forum for info...

the last picture is the best way I can think of having mac on windows...

john

I thought it was a bit amusing, honestly.
