Decided to buy the silver 2002 jetta tdi wagon with the automatic that was rebuilt properly. Shifts better than my mercedes. I like the leather seats and the usefulness of the estate. There is a perfect place in the back for my tools. Time to order another Panzer plate. :) The white jetta tdi sedan is dead in the drive with the AAMCO special. Beautiful car, will get this straightened out. Aamco ain't touching this car again, but they are going to fix it. So it looks like the 87 300d needs a home, will have to drop the price, no way I'll get the 7500 plus I have in it despite the book value of 8300. It's nearly perfect now, but we simply haven't bonded. :). Guess I'm going to sell my spare 83 J10 as well. It's just sitting there. I don't need to drive if it snows and have chains for the jettas. I can rent a truck when I need one. It's beautiful, solid, rust free and even runs well. The exhaust sounds great. My wife still thinks I'm crazy for even thinking about a wrangler, have to agree. Even at 18mpg that's half what the jetta can do. And the jettas have much more in the way of creature comforts. Spider spikes will make sure we get through the rare snow here. One of these days my Diesel J10 will be done. So it's fleet change time again, keep your popcorn fresh. At least I'm not making any frankensteins, yet. :). Have some ideas, but I won't mention them now. :) __john_at_http://wagoneers.com__ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Nov 2011 00:55:06 +0000 From: john Subject: Re: fsj: ah, the smell of burnt ATF... OMG! are you serious?. >I mean when their sharpest, brightest tech points to >the EGR valve on my TDI and says that's the throttle body I must >confess I have little confidence >in what they can do... I just added another vehicle to my fleet, but it's a part timer, ie: purchased to make money, it is a 1996 Mitsubishi Starwagon, these are the top of the line van from Mitsubishi, it has a beautiful interior, crushed velour in dark blue / gray, power moon roof, cruise, central locking, new engine (that has an issue) damn moron mechanics, not a dent to be seen anywhere, paint is like new, four new tires all for the bargain price of............wait for it................$300.00. The guy I bought it off is a local, I wanted a van to store some of my models in as they have completely taken over my hobby room, I have roughly 20 models now each with a minimum wingspan of 1.3 to 2 meters, so a van is an ideal way of storing them, however this van is WAY to good to just use as a storage shed for my models and the guy I bought it off is a damn fine friend and a key member to our little town. His name is Trevor Gladman and he is assistant coach to the Moorabool Valley Football Club MVFC, he is also club secretary and treasurer, when all is said and done he is without doubt one of the most decent men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing (right up there with you John). Now get this, he has two disabled kids, one has cerebral palsy, and the other has a severe learning disorder coupled with severe H.A.A.D.D Hyper Active Attention Deficit Disorder, Trevor pulls all these hours for our community and works six days a week to support his wife and try and pay for treatment for his kids, so it is my plan to repair the van and sell it, blue book value $8000. I will take out what the repairs owe me and give the profit to Trevor, Trevor helped coach Mitchell to be a great little footballer, he is always a happy fella no matter what life throws at him, I honestly cannot think of a more deserving person then Trevor and his wife, even if I get $4000 for it, it's a great Christmas present to two wonderful people. And it sure will make us here at the Halmshaw house feel good to give something back to a family that asks so little yet gives so much. Landon - How long was your truck parked before you saved it? It sounds like not entirely unlike me you got the truck that got neglected until it wasn't safe to drive and then got parked. I ran my Dakota with a bad stat for longer than I would like to mention...then the stat housing broke and the thing kept overheating. On that one it took about four hours to replace the stat and then a month later I had to pull the intake manifold and that took all day. Lets just say that I like having a heater. - -----Original Message----- From: Kim Tesar To: Jim Blair Cc: wallacem7 ; r16884 ; fsj-digest Sent: Sun, Nov 6, 2011 7:36 pm Subject: Re: fsj: Heater upgrades? I haven't logged into the one lately but it had some good info. Dieselspace? Will find and share. The 6.2 is less complex, higher compression and more efficient. With a banks kit even better so I've been told. The 6.5 can make more power, lot more options and goodies for it. But it's lower compression and you have to relocate the ecu off the engine to the front, just costs money to buy the kit. I spent a lot of money trying to get my 6.5 to be economical, 16 in town was its best. Freeway maybe 18-19. The 6.2 in the same vehicle would get 18-19 and would break 20. In my GW on the freeway 24. In town 16. I was running biodiesel but still. A good XJ will get me 16-17 in town. My jetta tdi with an at gets 35. My mercedes will get mid-20s to low 30s in town. My jetta with a stick got around 40 in town. The sd33t in the scout with 235s, 3.54s and about the same weight/shape was rated 20/24. My tug was getting 18 or so with biod with the na sd33. The 6.2 is a detroit diesel. Can't think of major issues right now. Transmissions were a big concern. The 700r4 needed to be beefed up. With a Diesel you have options. Pump Diesel, bioDiesel, mix with wvo, heated wvo, and so on. I have gotten back under way when out of fuel with a half quart of motor oil!!! A step van with a 6.2 should have a good transmission. Put a 4x4 tailshaft on it and drop it in your waggy. :) Btw, selling both the 87 300d and my white J10 to fund the 02 jetta wagon. Looking forward to driving it. I liked my little wagon, but not the stick or damage. This time any mods will be aimed at increasing fuel economy. :). That 11mm pump in my 03 wagon was a blast though. Smoking the front tires was pretty cool. But I'll take the economy thank you. Fwiw, a tdi in stock trim (alh) will put out about 100hp and 150ftlbs. That should be enough to move an XJ around. Anyone know if there is a tdi to aw4 adapter? My daughter is selling her 97 xj, and a friend is selling his clean 89 xj. I just happen to have a tdi motor connected to a dead trans. However, in about a week I will be celebrating 36 years of marriage, and if I want it to continue to be the pleasant and happy experience it has been I think it wise to NOT use that particular tdi motor. :) Frankenjeepandjettajohn over and out. __john_at_http://wagoneers.com__ - -----Original Message----- From: Michel Balea Date: Mon, 7 Nov 2011 07:58:18 To: Subject: Re: fsj: Why not...
