(one of them...) "if only I were a rich man"... checking prices on my 300D I found another nice 92 300D for a decent price... which means I'll never sell mine for any where near book, and I'm tempted to buy the 92 as well... but wait, there's more, my daughter and son in law are tempting me with their '97 XJ country... :) anyway, I put the jetta and the 300D up... the 300D at more than a grand below state value and nearly 2k below book... I put the jetta at nearly 2k OVER book... already have someone interested and will likely sell it easily at that price... it is so close to call... both the '87 300D and the '02 Jetta are in absolutely clean and superb condition... the jetta is virtually flawless, I'm sure one could find a few nicks and such, but it's in really good condition... the '87 300D is in slightly less pristine condition but considering it's age it's in amazing condition, it's really better than my '91 300D was... we were pretty much settled in on keeping the benz... then the news about fuel prices climbing and I waivered... but my wife doesn't drive much, and the older Diesel is more tolerant of alternate motivational juices... so, I decided to let the market decide... one other thing that I've learned... that I really do like a darker interior... I was wanting to get a WJ with a tan interior for the longest time... but having a tan interior just didn't feel the same as a black or light gray... so this was a good thing... will stick with black interiors, it is actually easier to keep them clean and also keep things out of view... fortunately for us we don't live in a sunny or warm climate... I remember living down south with a black vinyl interior in my mustang... ouch. john - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ vehicle city/hwy engine/trans/xfr - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1987 Mercedes 300D (124) 25/38 mpg 3.0L Turbo Diesel/AT - for sale (likely not going anywhere) 2002 VW Jetta GLS Sedan TDI 30/45 mpg 1.9L TDI/AT - for sale 2002 VW Jetta GLS Wagon TDI 30/45 mpg 1.9L TDI/AT - stanley the superpup 1983 Jeep J10 long box (SJ) 11/15 mpg 5.9L AT/NP208 (best mpg 17.68) #27 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1983 Jeep J10 Stepside (SJ) (Superdawg)- under construction since 1999 getting '80 Scout SD33T Diesel, TF727/NP208 mpg: 20/24 expected - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all - please reply to: john-at-wagoneers.com Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 TRSTGZS http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2012 23:35:40 -0600 From: Landon Tesar Subject: fsj: New to me 4.0 for J10? Hi all, You've probably been following that I have a tired 258 in my J10. I drove it about 70 miles and it blew about 1/2 a quart of 20W-50 in various directions (rear main seal, blowby into the air intake, and i *think* it may be leaking out of the plastic hose for the mechanical oil pressure guage at the compression fitting, but only after everything gets hot. I should run it up to temp and then find out.... Anyway, I found a '98 4.0 in a Cherokee that needs a new home. It's had 120K easy miles and looks really good. I get the flywheel, the starter, the intake and exhaust manifolds, the alternator and power steering and water pump, and hey, 6 qt oil pan? Looks really clean. $500 seems like a deal when I paid 250 for a 258 core to scrounge stroker parts. So had the 258 crank turned, and installed new crank and rod bearings in it, awaiting a 4.0 head. But this 4.0 is so clean, I could stroke the 4.0 with the 0630 head, or just drop the 4.0 in the way it is. Questions: Does a stock '98 4.0 have torque in the right place for a J10 with 3.54 gears, T18, and 31" tires to get up and down the road? (The 258 right now is really a slug) Would a stroker with ported head and probably a small (read Crower 44243) camshaft replacement and compression ratio increase make a *needed* difference ? Nothing to tow right now, just some light 4x4 on the beach. Cam + lifters -> $200 Valve Job and Port -> $300 Pistons and rings -> $200 Align hone/Deck/Bore/Hone cylinders -> probably $400 by the time it's done. Press piston pins / new rod bolts / some assembly at machine shop -> $200 Ouch, I think I just answered the question. Please let me know what you think. I don't want this 4.0 to be a high-end motor where I'm just in the low vacuum range all the time. I think the T18 helps here. - - Landon ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #3856 **************************
