BioDiesel has issues too, but not as bad... biggest issue with BioD is gelling at much higher temps than Diesel... and of course depending on how it was made, could have excessive lye/methanol in it and eat rubber lines... you need to switch to Viton if you plan to use more than about 5% BioDiesel... Alternate fuels are not a bad idea, if we weren't sitting on vast reserves of crude in our own country... Ethanol is generally made from corn, which is a FOOD product... BioDiesel is less invasive to the food cycle as it can be made from a number of things including some waste byproducts... Diesels are happy with just about any liquid that is capable of burning... the slower the burn the happier a Diesel will be... ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- john-at- http://wagoneers.com TRSTGZS Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and Diesels don't rust, they mold buy direct: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- b^\A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college educationb^] Theodore Roosevelt (American 26th US President (1901-09), 1858-1919) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: FSJ list Date: Wed, 2 May 2012 23:34:27 -0500 Subject: fsj: Gas without Ethanol Here's a site that lists stations that sell undiluted gasoline....several in Snohomish/Puyallup/Everett. and a whole bunch in Oklahoma. I've blended WVO and Diesel, homemade bioDiesel and Diesel... you lose power with bioDiesel, but it does smell a little better, it gels quicker and eats rubber... if you have the skills to make it and are a good chemist you can save some money, but it's a lot of work and a lot of mess. The bioDiesel master I'd been working with for years moved and I found another person making it... his formulation was not as refined and the first tank in my TDI finished off my injection pump, sure, it was my fault, I went over 80% and didn't pump it in through a filter out of my barrel... it clogged my filter and pulled up old metal debris in the bottom of the ALH injection pump and killed it... the pump shop said it was already worn before the bioDiesel, but ever since then I haven't bothered running it in my TDI... not using it in my Benz either, current 300D is a 1987 with an OM603 with a high pressure system, I've replaced the seals in the injection pump on my OM602s and that of a friend's about three times... getting good at taking that injection pump apart in the car... about 45 minutes... my current 300D has only 240,000 miles and isn't leaking... so I'm just not excited about starting this cycle of leaking rubber seals again... :) On the other hand, blending WVO with Diesel if it's been well filtered, makes for a nice smelling exhaust and doesn't seem to impact economy that much, while it will have more energy than bioDiesel it still isn't as potent as pump Diesel. The other thing with WVO is if you keep the blend "light", meaning no more than about 20%, it doesn't seem to impact the rubber seals as much, if you start getting a little more aggressive and go over that then the leaks in the return lines, fuel lines and internal seals start. I've ended learning a LOT about fuel lines, fuel filters, injection pumps, injectors, return lines, high pressure seals, lift pumps and got to talk to a lot of nice people that were happy to take my money and talk with me about injectors and injection pumps and life in general. If your motivation in using BioDiesel is to save money, you can if you make your own and you're a mechanic, and you have an older Diesel with an inline cam style pump. If it's to only to improve the environment, then I suggest getting old cooking oil, heating it up to get rid of the water, carefully filtering it and then using no more than about 20-25% in your Diesel... you'll provide even more environmental benefits as you won't be messing with lye and methanol or having to dispose of glycerin and so on... with WVO you'll still have some minimal fuel line issues, but not nearly as many... It would be nice to have a Diesel WJ or another Diesel XJ to cover the issues... if I'm ever able to get a Diesel CRD in a WK I'll likely NOT jump into the use of bioD or WVO in it until I understand the system completely. I'm NOT using BioDiesel in my '87 300D(OM603) or my '02 TDI(ALH), I am considering doing a little bit of blending... but at this point the risks exceed the benefits, even at $4.50/gal. So at this point I've been selling my WVO to a guy that has one of those oil-burners to heat his shop, and I picked up a Diesel stove from a ship and will try to burn my WVO to heat my shop... :) at least until I get my J10 done... My '83 J10 stepside with an SD33T has a nice cam style injection pump with metal lines and is old school... that one will get a second tank and run heated WVO... The older OM617 Mercedes engines are also quite good for this and there are kits to transplant them into Jeeps. I've shared those links before... too bad there isn't any home-based stuff we can put in gas engines to reduce cost... hmmm... home refinery, take WVO and extract gasoline??? :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- john-at- http://wagoneers.com TRSTGZS Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and Diesels don't rust, they mold buy direct: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- b^\A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college educationb^] Theodore Roosevelt (American 26th US President (1901-09), 1858-1919) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Thu, 3 May 2012, Mrinsure wrote: # # At one point in time, I was looking at a diesel (Cummins) truck.
