I mean tool... but not having completely read all the instructions, not that they would necessarily help, as I found out when reading the shop manual this evening... I'm having a little challenge understanding the data, and figured one of you may have used a scan tool like this before and can give some pointers. This is specifically for VW/Audi and Skoda... having lived in Europe what I think of when I think of Skoda can't be associated with VW or Audi... but that was a long time ago... anyway... summary of a running log is here: recorded injected quanity, timing and fuel flow. Noticed last night that all 4 injectors weren't quite equal... but tonight I noticed some odd stuff with the timing... http://johnmeister.com/Jetta-TDI/VCDS-screens/25sep2012-drive-home.pdf see page 5 - TIMING so... after looking at the big red Bentley shop manual I could find nothing about timing specs... so I'm going to have to assume that the Ross Tech device knows.. and if I'm reading this correctly, it's saying that the timing was supposed to be 1.3 degrees BEFORE TDC... and the actual was 1.8 degrees AFTER TDC... On the display the heading actually would change to ATDC... Of course I hadn't clicked through to the log file function until I got to the top of the drive... so I drove around the loop... down the hill, back up and then back down... guess that's about 1/10th of a mile at least... If the assumption about timing is true, and supported by the other log information, then my timing is almost as retarded as I am... haha... because I'm not quite getting this... 1.3 BTDC to 1.8 ATDC is 3.1 degrees off... retarded, which would most certainly impact my fuel economy... Since I plan on replacing the timing belt and pulleys I'll not mess with timing right now... need to order those parts... Will continue reading and taking more samples and with a few extra eyes, figure out what else might be needed. All of the logs, along with the csv data, are in the directory: http://johnmeister.com/Jetta-TDI/VCDS-screens/ (and fwiw, my membership with the yahoos for vcds hasn't been processed yet, or y'all warned them ahead of time...) oh... the connector blinked green and red... but it was recording data, so I'm thinking it wasn't an error... the device checked out fine... anyway, here's the extraction of Page 5 - TIMING... any useful suggestions are welcome... mild insults tolerated from the helpful... I have pictures of water running out of the screw holes on the vent on the passenger side... I stuck the hose in the wiper vent area, let it run... I could see water weeping out by the vent, pulled the screws and water was pouring out... will pull the vent, clean and seal... in the middle of replacing the water pump and hoses... john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- Linux: the choice of a GNU generation http://WAGONEERS.COM Snohomish, WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ...shop AMSOIL directly at: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (26th President (1901-09), 1858-1919) RTB&TRSTGZS - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #3976 **************************
